G.711 ITU-T compatible vocoder

G.711 (A-law/µ-law coding) algorithm uses logarithmic companding, which can compress 16-bit linear sample down to 8-bits sample. Logarithmic compression matches the way the human ear works. It only loses information, which the brain would not process and gives good quality results for speech and music with uniform Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). It is mainly used for digital telephone communications.
