Benefits
- HCL Technologies has developed an optimised version of a personality layer, which can smoothen the migration of existing VxWorks based applications to RTLinux. Almost all commercial flavours of RTOS come with huge costs attached in the form of sale and licensing cost for them, so developers must spend part of their product development budget on the fees associated with using a third party operating system, either in up front costs or per unit prices- and sometimes both. These costs can be brought down if an open source, off the shelf version of Linux can be used within various devices, which presently uses commercial RTOS. There are plenty of benefits of migrating or developing future applications using embedded Linux. The major benefits offered by any Linux distribution over commercially available RTOS are:
- Open source & royalty free
- Powerful, robust, reliable
- Configurable, scalable, modular, customisable
- Excellent support for networking, graphics, protocols, storage, peripherals, multitasking
- Supported by tens of thousands of developers
- Popular enough to track the technology curve
- The only "multi-vendor OS"
- Support for Real time capabilities using a Real Time kernel for RT applications
- Description:
- The VxWorks-2-RTLinux Adaptation Layer (OAL) facilitates running VxWorks based applications on RTLinux system, with minimal effort of migration. The VxWorks based application simply needs to be re-compiled and linked with the OAL libraries (or kernel modules) to generate the RTLinux based application module. The generated RTLinux module can then be deployed on top of RTLinux system.
