Will Independent OS Vendors Survive?Linley Chips In - The Linley GroupApr. 29, 2010 |
The impact of Intel's acquisition of Wind River continues to reverberate through the embedded industry. This week, Freescale announced that Enea is now its partner of choice for real-time operating systems (RTOS). Although Wind River's VxWorks is the most popular RTOS among Freescale's customers, the Intel acquisition makes it difficult for Freescale to share roadmaps and code with Wind River. Instead, Freescale will work with Enea to optimize its RTOS for its new processors. The PowerPC vendor will continue to support VxWorks on its existing processors, but that OS will be a lower priority in the future.
