Are 64 Bits Really Necessary for Consumer Products?MIPS Blog - Gideon IntraterApr. 11, 2011 |
Last week, MIPS announced plans to bring to market the industry’s first 64-bit multi-threaded multiprocessor IP core, code named “Prodigy.”
As we talk with folks in the industry about it, we generally hear that yes, people understand the need for multicore products in scaling performance. And yes, people can understand the benefits of MIPS’ unique multithreading technology, which enables enormous efficiencies for a broad range of applications. And we hear that people understand the need for a 64-bit architecture in applications such as enterprise networking, where there is a need for extra memory and headroom.
