ASIC manufacture and test: Can someone please tell me what’s going on?Fractally Speaking - Doug RidgeDec. 23, 2011 |
How many times have you heard that question asked and looked up to see a babble of blank stares (or whatever the term is for a group of people with blank stares)? I thought about this in terms of advanced-node ASIC design containing complex pieces of IP from various vendors. The number of hands that touch the design is huge (but please don’t use those hands to touch the wafers or bare die!). In all seriousness though, having so many people and companies involved means that it becomes increasingly difficult for any single individual to have a reasonable depth of knowledge on all aspects of the chip design, manufacture and test. Increase this to multiple devices using different foundries and packaging and test houses and the task becomes astronomical.
