Universal Flash Storage - Designed for Next Generation Smartphones,TabletsThe Eyes Have it : A Mixed-signal IP Blog - Navraj Nandra, SynopsysSep. 24, 2012 |
Two challenges faced by developers of application processors used in smartphones and tablets are the increasing amount of data intensive applications that require fast and reliable storage and the confusion over which embedded flash memory technology to implement together with the various flash memory card adaptors.
Universal Flash Storage (UFS) attempts to solve both challenges. It is a common embedded storage specification for all mobile devices. It is faster, higher in reliability and lower in power, compared to the current flash memory storage technologies such as eMMC and SD. Mian Quddus, Chairman of JEDEC’s Committee for Flash Memory Modules, said: “UFS as an industry-wide flash storage standard will address a number of market demands, including faster data access, lower power consumption, and improved performance for flash-based devices, benefiting device designers and consumers alike.”
