When a startup significantly changes its business plan, market analysts often praise the company for responding to market realities – unless the change is so severe that the company has effectively morphed into something new.  In early October, Achronix announced that it would augment its FPGA sales by licensing its switching fabric for companies developing ARM-based Systems on a Chip (SoCs) and Application Specific Standard Products (ASSPs).

Given how tough it is to break into the market of the four leading FPGA vendors, Achronix in some senses may be bowing to the inevitable.  But I’m glad that industry analysts, like David Manners at Electronics Weekly, are asking the tough questions about this business strategy.  Is this an admission that Achronix is not getting the number of  Speedster FPGA design wins it would like?
