Making IoT Security a Reality
By Bart Stevens (Inside Secure)
Abstract
Significant revenue opportunities await businesses that deliver IoT innovations to market, as the possibilities are limited only by our imagination and will span all areas of our daily lives - allowing us to remotely control the temperature, lights and security systems in our homes, travel anywhere we want to go in self-driving cars or automatically send health information such as blood pressure, heart rate or blood sugar levels straight from our devices to our doctors. The security of these devices and our data will be the defining factor in whether our connected future is truly a welcomed improvement. While some IoT devices are a novelty, many are critical to the safety of humans, property and resources. Our current security models for PCs and smartphones are not applicable to IoT devices. Most devices have limited processing and storage capacity. Many "smart" products fall into an "install and forget" status under the management of consumers. This session will introduce IoT's unique security challenges and detail the advantages and tradeoff of embedding security IP into the microcontroller or using software only solutions to enable highly secure solutions that do not interfere with the user experience, work in devices with limited processing and storage capacity and meet the industry's cost and time to market requirements. Additionally, this session will discuss why it is important for security vendors, device manufacturers and IoT solution providers to work together to implement new security models and standards that address the unique security demands of IoT.
