LSI Logic H.264 Technology Integrated in New HD and SD MPEG-4 AVC Systems From Modulus Video
The Modulus Video ME6000 supports new satellite, telco, cable and IPTV services by delivering maximum HD video quality using the least bandwidth. Sophisticated H.264 technology from LSI Logic has been incorporated into the ME6000 hardware engine to support Modulus' design achievement, which uses a balanced approach between system hardware and software to maximize compression and can meet the massive processing requirements -- more than 600 billion operations per second -- needed to deliver real-time HD video in half the bit rate of MPEG-2.
The new Video Pre-Processing (VPP) option for the Modulus Video ME1000 AVC standard definition (SD) encoder "cleans" the source video, further increasing image quality and reducing bandwidth requirements. The VPP option includes motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technology and powerful DoMiNo(R) processors from LSI Logic which have been specially tuned for the ME1000. MCTF technology is the optimal way to remove noise from video without incurring motion blur, thereby improving picture quality and allowing for enhanced compression efficiency. This capability is of critical importance to satellite, telco and IPTV broadcast business models where meeting consumer quality demands must be achieved within tight bandwidth constraints.
"Licensing LSI Logic's video processing technology has helped Modulus Video take full advantage of the AVC standard," said Mark Magee, vice president of engineering at Modulus Video. "As a result, Modulus Video delivers the best image quality using the least bandwidth."
The LSI Logic H.264 Video Technology Platform is fully compliant with the International Telecommunications Union's Telecommunications Committee (ITU-T) coding standard. H.264/MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) delivers 2x or better video compression improvement over MPEG-2/H.262, presenting a significant technological advancement in coding efficiency and quality. LSI Logic's real-time H.264 encoding technology has many applications, from broadcast systems that enable cable and satellite operators to offer more channels in existing systems, to consumer products such as personal video recorders that can store twice as many programs or record HD content to DVD.
"We are pleased that Modulus Video has been able to bring some of the most advanced broadcast quality MPEG-4 AVC products to market in record time by leveraging our specialized building blocks designed specifically for the broadcast market," said Bob Saffari, senior director of marketing and business development, LSI Logic's Consumer Products Division. "With LSI Logic's H.264 Video Technology Platform, Modulus Video has created a scalable architecture to enable both standard and high definition H.264/MPEG4-AVC systems that enable broadcasters to provide consumers with the full visual impact of HDTV while using the least amount of precious bandwidth."
The Consumer Products Division of LSI Logic Corporation is a leader in innovative digital media processing technologies and was the first company to offer a real-time encoder for the emerging H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standard. Leveraging its expertise in MPEG technology, LSI Logic provides specialized real-time codec technologies for SD and HD H.264 video compression/decompression, ideal for use in traditional Broadcast, IP-based broadcast, Web streaming and DVD authoring environments.
