LSI Logic Receives Industry's First Qml Certification at 0.13-Micron for Military and Aerospace Applications
- LSI Logic certified as a microelectronics supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense and Armed Forces
- RapidChip(R) Platform ASICs manufactured in 0.18 and 0.13 micron process technologies planned for military and aerospace applications
- LSI Logic and its Gresham, Oregon foundry each receive QML certification by DSCC
MILPITAS, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) today announced it has become the industry's first microelectronics supplier to receive certification as a Qualified Manufacturers List (QML) supplier of 0.13-micron process technology to the U.S. Department of Defense and Armed Forces. The Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC)-QML certifications will allow LSI Logic to leverage its leading-edge process technologies (includes 0.18-micron), in-depth system-level expertise, extensive CoreWare(R) IP library and innovative RapidChip(R) Platform ASIC portfolio for use in defense and aerospace applications. The certifications place LSI Logic Corporation and its world-class Gresham, Oregon foundry in a select group of U.S. companies authorized to offer its manufacturing and engineering services for U.S. military use.
"The significant investments we have made clearly indicate LSI Logic's long-term commitment to the military and aerospace electronics market," said John Bendekovic, director of military and aerospace marketing and business development for LSI Logic. "The successful DSCC audit and subsequent certification place us in the unique position of being a U.S. based company with dedicated advanced silicon process technology and innovative design approaches that are qualified to meet the most complex and challenging needs of the U.S. Department of Defense and Armed Forces."
LSI Logic and its Gresham foundry were notified of the DSCC recommendations as a result of an initial audit in November 2004 and a successful three-day audit conducted in March 2005. A formal report will be published by the agency in the very near future. DSCC is an agency chartered by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to qualify, monitor and list vendors as authorized direct and indirect suppliers to the DOD and U.S. Armed Forces.
The formal assessment involved two DSCC auditors who conducted an in-depth examination of LSI Logic's Gresham foundry and supporting organizations to determine whether the company was in compliance with the QML MIL-PRF-38535F standard. An observer from the Aerospace Corporation was also present to conduct a preliminary review of LSI Logic systems on behalf of the U.S. Air Force for future potential space applications. The auditors reviewed key Quality Operational and Manufacturing systems and processes. In addition, extensive assessments were made of subcontractor/vendor management activities, package/assembly processes, records management application (RMA) requirements and reliability methodologies. DSCC and LSI Logic are continuing to work together on the final steps of the certification and product qualification processes.
Bendekovic added, "In every case, the DSCC auditors were very impressed by the cutting-edge business systems and methodologies LSI Logic has in place to drive the highest possible quality and manufacturing efficiencies. In some cases, the auditors proposed that LSI Logic's leadership in these industry 'best practices' be used to enhance some of the military specifications and standards."
