Mentor Graphics Announces Certification of its High-Speed USB On-The-Go Controller IP
WILSONVILLE, Ore., May 13, 2005 - Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT), a leader in standards-based semiconductor intellectual property (IP), today announced the successful certification of its high-speed Universal Serial Bus (USB) On-The-Go (OTG) controller at the recent USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) Compliance Workshop in Tokyo, Japan, April 3-7, 2005.
This was the first event at which the USB-IF has recognized standard compliance for high-speed USB 2.0 OTG, which provides high bandwidth communications in consumer products, such as digital cameras, game consoles, set-top boxes, digital printers and scanners. Mentor Graphics submitted a full-custom platform with an integrated high-speed USB OTG controller, paired with a USB3500 Hi-Speed USB Physical Layer Interface (PHY) from SMSC, for the compliance test. The platform, running the Linux operating system, provided full support for USB OTG, including host and peripheral operation as well as support for the Host Negotiation (HNP) and Session Request (SRP) Protocols.
Continued demand for USB applications is evident with the development of new consumer connectivity products. According to Venture Development Corporation's (VDC) developer survey results published in July 2004 as part of the 2004 Embedded Software Strategic Market Intelligence Program, adoption of USB in device development is expected to increase from 29.6% to 47.2% by 2006.
Reliable IP Implementation for First-Pass Success
Mentor's USB OTG controller combined with a reliable third-party PHY, such as SMSC's USB3500, enables quick, proven integration, and design reuse benefits, for a complete USB OTG solution. "We were excited to provide our PHY to Mentor's host controller for this new High-Speed USB On-The-Go compliance test," stated Steve Nelson, vice president of marketing, Connectivity Solutions at SMSC. "Mentor is one of the recognized leaders in USB On-The-Go IP and our certification success establishes us to be on the cutting-edge of this newest standard for dynamic consumer applications."
"With yet another successful product certification, Mentor continues to provide complete, low-risk standards-based IP solutions for USB and other key applications," stated Michael Kaskowitz, Mentor Graphics IP division general manager and president of the VSI Alliance. "Our collaboration with SMSC will help to accelerate adoption of USB On-The-Go. Together we provide huge gains to companies focused on delivering innovative consumer products with minimized risk using our pre-certified IP and PHY solutions."
Mentor USB High-Speed OTG Features:
Mentor's OTG core is a versatile controller IP solution for USB On-The-Go that operates equally well as a simple peripheral device or as the host in a sophisticated USB network. As a host, it supports peripheral devices of all speeds and, as a peripheral, it communicates at either high-speed (480Mbps) or full speed (12Mbps) when connected to legacy host computers.
Other key features include:
- Compliant with the On-The-Go supplement to the USB 2.0 specification
- Compliant with USB 2.0 standard for high-speed devices
- Supports both Session Request Protocol (SRP) and Host Negotiation Protocol (HNP)
- UTMI+ Level 2 interface is provided for connecting to a suitable USB high-/full-speed transceiver, such as the SMSC GT3500
- Configurable for up to 15 additional Transmit endpoints and up to 15 additional Receive endpoints
- 32-bit AMBA AHB-compatible CPU interface, supporting multi-layer operations
