Imagination Technologies' PowerVR MBX Supports Windows Mobile 5.0
London; UK -- June 28, 2005 -- Imagination Technologies, a leader in system-on-chip intellectual property (SoC IP), announces that its PowerVR MBX graphics and video IP is one of the first embedded graphics technologies to support the recently announced Windows Mobile 5.0 software platform and Direct3D Mobile API.
Announced at Microsoft Mobile & Embedded DevCon 2005 (MEDC 2005), the release of Windows Mobile 5.0 will enable 3D gaming and video that brings to life compelling entertainment applications.
Early demonstrations of Windows Mobile 5.0’s powerful Direct3D Mobile support have already taken place at MEDC 2005 using the PowerVR MBX enabled Dell Axim™ X50v.
Says David McBrien, VP Business Development, Imagination Technologies: “PowerVR MBX has already proven itself to be a significant step forward for mobile graphics and has been adopted by six of the top ten semiconductor vendors for their next generation mobile application processors. Combined with a powerful enabling API like Direct3D Mobile PowerVR MBX will really be able to wow consumers.”
“One of our goals with Windows Mobile 5.0 was to enable our partners to easily leverage the APIs so they could quickly develop applications and offer enhancements to the Windows Mobile software platform,” said Jonas Hasselberg, group product manager, Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR MBX graphics is a great example of a partner taking advantage of the flexibility of Windows Mobile 5.0 and offering a rich, powerful multimedia experience for customers.”
Dell will offer a Windows Mobile 5.0 software upgrade for the Dell Axim X50 handheld family later this year. The new software is expected to enable users to take advantage of several new productivity and multimedia enhancements, such as updated Microsoft Office Mobile programs and Direct3D Mobile support.
PowerVR MBX has rapidly been established as the de facto standard for high performance graphics and video on mobile phones and PDAs. PowerVR MBX is being employed by leading semiconductor companies worldwide, including: Freescale; Intel; Philips; Renesas; Samsung; and TI.
PowerVR MBX IP cores enable class leading performance and full 3D features such as skinning, FSAA, curved surfaces, per-pixel lighting and texture compression.
