SafeNet Provides Security Co-Processors to Protect Broadband Connection
BALTIMORE, Maryland, July 5, 2005 - SafeNet, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFNT), setting the standard for information security, today announced that Wavesat, a leading developer of WiMAX silicon and reference designs, has integrated SafeNet's SafeXcel-1141 security co-processor to power the WaveSat EvolutiveTM WiMAX DM256 reference design for OEM developers building WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) broadband equipment.
"We see strong demand in the OEM market for highly secure WiMAX equipment that protects broadband connections against malicious attacks." said Pierre Lamoureux, vice president of engineering and CTO for Wavesat. "We selected SafeNet because it is the only security vendor that delivers a complete hardware and software solution to provide carrier-grade security for our WiMAX reference platform. Teaming up with a leader like SafeNet enabled us to rapidly build the most secure WiMAX platform at the best price and performance points that today's broadband solutions require."
To provide maximum protection against an increasing range of security threats, Wavesat's DM256 reference design is powered by SafeNet's SafeXcel-1141, a cost-effective security co-processor that accelerates algorithms critical for reliable WiMAX security, including RSA for key exchange, AES and DES/3DES for data encryption, and HMAC/SHA for data integrity. Off loading security algorithms from the main CPU to the dedicated SafeXcel security co-processor dramatically improves application performance and enables scalable WiMAX base stations and subscriber units.
"Wavesat's highly integrated, high-performance reference platform gives systems developers a head start to provide secure WiMAX equipment, at a fraction of the cost and time required to build in-house designs from scratch," adds Henk Pruim, Vice President and General Manager for SafeNet's OEM/Networking Business Unit.
A next-generation Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) platform with advanced NLOS (non-line-of-sight) functionality, Wavesat's Evolutive DM256 solution is designed for OEM vendors that are building next-generation WiMAX base stations and subscriber units for IP-based broadband data and voice services. Its carrier-class design supports broadband speeds and quality of service (QoS) levels that enable carriers to offer broadband data and VoIP services to thousands of residential and business subscribers in a single cell.
Original equipment manufacturers benefit from this ready-to-deploy platform by reducing total cost, accelerating time to market, and leveraging a complete solution that meets the highest security and performance requirements in the WiMAX market.
WiMAX, the 802.16 standard for wireless broadband networks, has a range of up to 30 miles and can deliver last mile broadband connectivity at a maximum of 75 megabits per second, which is more than 20 times the speed of the fastest wired broadband available today. In a recent report, the market research firm TelecomView predicts that WiMAX will pick up 70% of the new high speed wireless market segment by 2009 due to its higher performance and greater flexibility. And according to market research firm Northern Sky Research, the WiMAX market will reach 12.4 million subscribers by 2010.
The SafeXcel security co-processors are a key component of SafeNet's fully integrated security systems for IPsec and SSL VPN, Firewall, and Intrusion Prevention appliances. SafeNet offers OEMs a wide range of security product choices to build advanced networking solutions while lowering product cost and time to market. Other SafeNet security products include semiconductor IP and security co-processors for hardware acceleration, security protocol stacks, as well as advanced VPN software toolkits.
