Opulan Licenses MIPS Technologies MIPS32 4KEc Core
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA and SHANGHAI, CHINA, August 1, 2005 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, announced today that Shanghai-based IC design firm Opulan Technologies Corporation has licensed the MIPS32® 4KEc® core. The high performance, low power 4KEc core will be used to develop SoCs for xDSL access equipment for the Asia Pacific Service Provider market.
According to Infonetics Research in its latest DSL Aggregation Hardware report, worldwide DSL subscribers grew 70% to 98.6 million between 2003 and 2004, and are projected to reach over 195 million in 2008. The report also stated that 29% of 2004 total DSL revenue was from the Asia Pacific region.
The synthesizable 4KEc core, a member of the MIPS32 4KE™ family, gives licensees the flexibility to optimize applications for performance, size or power consumption, thereby reducing overall system costs. The 4KE core family delivers 1.5 DMIPS/MHz performance in an area as small as 1.0 mm 2 in a 0.13-micron TSMC process. In addition, the 4KEc core offers the broadest industry support of operating systems, middleware, algorithms and tools for embedded applications including broadband. The CorExtend™ capability of the Pro Series cores enables SoC designers to add user-defined instructions and improve performance for faster code execution.
“The MIPS architecture is proven and respected throughout the Asia Pacific region, so it made good business sense to select MIPS Technologies for our current and future product development,” said Dr. Jian Liu, vice president, engineering for Opulan Technologies. “Leveraging the user-defined-instructions, performance and low power consumption of the MIPS cores allows us to deliver superior solutions to market quickly and cost-effectively.”
“As telecommunications infrastructure continues to mature throughout the Asia Pacific region, the demand for broadband access has intensified dramatically,” said Jack Browne, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies, Inc. “We’re pleased to play a critical role in Opulan’s ability to develop innovative designs for a fiercely competitive and cost-sensitive market.”
