LatticeEC FPGA is Chip of Choice for Quad HDLC PCI Card
HILLSBORO, OR - August 16, 2005 - Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC) today announced that CASE Communications has selected the LatticeEC™ FPGA for use in the design of a QUAD HDLC PCI Card. The end product is the Tunneling Router LR6000-HOT™ (HDLC Over TCP), which allows legacy protocols to be transported over IP, replacing expensive digital circuits. The LatticeEC FPGA-based PCI card is being used for duplicate HDLC controllers and PCI interface, including full master/slave with 8 DMA controllers.
"We decided to develop our own card because existing cards either were too expensive or unable to meet our application requirements either in functionality or performance," said Roger Holden, Development Director for CASE. "Then we considered joint development with other companies, but that proved too expensive. Off the shelf chips were evaluated, but they had limitations that were not acceptable for our project. At that point we knew the best solution was an FPGA, and we established these selection criteria: low cost; suitable packages; sufficient on-board memory; PCI interface; live at power up; and a sophisticated simulation and design compiler tool suite at a reasonable cost.
"We contacted several FPGA vendors," Holden continued. "Only Lattice and their distributor WBC were able to provide accurate pricing for various volumes of devices immediately, and confirm by fax the same day. That kind of responsiveness was very important to us. The LatticeEC FPGA satisfied all of our selection criteria, and was chosen for our project. The Lattice device and the card have performed flawlessly for us," Holden concluded.
"As the performance of FPGAs continues to increase and device cost falls, more and more customers are moving from fixed logic or custom devices and turning to programmable logic solutions," said Stan Kopec, Lattice vice president of corporate marketing. "Our LatticeEC FPGA is a perfect example of a high performance, low cost device - a compelling value for our customers."
About the LatticeECP and LatticeEC FPGA Families
The LatticeECP™ and LatticeEC FPGA device families are architected to provide the most optimized feature sets combined with the lowest total solution costs of any FPGAs. The new LatticeECP-DSP™ products, targeted for high-performance DSP applications, provide up to a 50% performance and 75% logic utilization improvement over other low cost solutions when implementing common DSP functions. The LatticeEC FPGA product family, targeted for general-purpose FPGA applications, is a precise and targeted response to the market's explosive demand for low cost, architecturally streamlined logic solutions. Through advanced 130nm silicon technology, an optimized architecture and proprietary circuit design, the new Lattice devices lower total solution costs by up to 30% to 50% compared with existing FPGA solutions, and are expected to broaden the adoption of FPGAs within the $20 billion ASIC marketplace.
