LSI Logic and Cabot Communications Collaborate to Bring Digital TV Set-Top Box Middleware to DVD Recorder Products
- LSI Logic teams with Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) and MHEG-5 software leader Cabot Communications for single-chip DVD recorder solutions supporting digital broadcast
- Cost-effective solution designed to provide faster time-to-market and optimized products for consumer electronics manufacturers
BERLIN, IFA Show - Sept. 5, 2005 - LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), a leader in innovative digital media processing technologies for the Digital Home, and Cabot Communications, a leading independent European supplier of digital TV (DTV) software technologies for set-top boxes and integrated digital TVs, today announced that they are bringing DTV reception to DVD recorder products. By combining Cabots Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) middleware stack, Aurora, with LSI Logics new single-chip, DoMiNo® 8623 (DMN-8623) and 8673 (DMN-8673) DVD recorder processor solutions (also announced today), consumer electronics manufacturers can bring products to market faster, more cost-effectively and with less risk. With the integration of digital TV reception into advanced DVD recorders or hard disk drive (HDD)/DVD combination recorder products, manufacturers can address the accelerating transition from analog TV to digital TV broadcast in Europe and other geographies.
"Cabot's expertise in digital broadcast software is complementary to LSI Logics strengths in HDD and DVD recording," said Darren Standing, business development manager, Cabot Communications. "By integrating Cabots pan-European DVB middleware, which includes support for MHEG-5, with LSI logics new DoMiNo processors, we can provide our mutual customers with a very effective DTV solution for DVD recorders."
Aurora is a pan-European, open standards-based middleware stack for free-to-air digital terrestrial and satellite receivers that can be configured to meet the unique market requirements of any DTT network and interactive standard, including MHEG-5 and MHP. The tight integration of the Aurora stack with LSI Logics DMN-8623 and DMN-8673 DVD recorder processor solutions will ensure that the both functionality and user experience of DVD recorders is optimized.
"By integrating Aurora, were able to extend our leadership position in DVD recorder solutions and enable our customers to address new market opportunities faster and with less risk," said Neil Bullock, strategic marketing manager for LSI Logics Consumer Products Group. "We are delighted to partner with a proven market leader like Cabot for our new DoMiNo processors."
Both the DMN-8623 and DMN-8673 are highly integrated single-chip DVD recorder solutions, which essentially integrate the key functions of a DVD recorder and a set-top box, significantly reducing the bill-of-material cost. The DMN-8623 supports the recording and playback of one digital or analog TV channel or video stream for single-drive DVD recorders, while the DMN-8673 supports the recording of two digital or analog TV streams to a hard disk drive with simultaneous playback in combination HDD/DVD recorders.
LSI Logic's Consumer Products Group provides innovative digital media processing and silicon solutions to industry-leading, worldwide consumer electronics manufacturers. With a complete line of cutting-edge standard and custom products for DVD, DVR, EVD, video game, digital and HDTV, portable audio, set-top box, and professional video production/broadcasting devices, LSI Logic delivers entertainment into and throughout the Digital Home.
