Xilinx And 4i2i Demonstrate Industry's First High Definition H.264/AVC Encoder Available In A Single FPGA
Virtex and Spartan family of FPGAs provides the performance and flexibility required in H.264 Video Encoding
September 7, 2005, WEYBRIDGE, UK, - Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world's leading programmable logic supplier, and 4i2i Communications, a global leader in video coding intellectual property cores licensing, today announced the launch of the industry’s first High Definition H.264 video encoder in a single FPGA. Using Xilinx feature-rich programmable logic devices, 4i2i has developed a licensable intellectual property solution that provides a high definition H.264 encoder available in VHDL, Verilog or netlist formats. This optimized encoder, can be implemented in a single FPGA (field programmable gate array) in either the Xilinx Virtex™ or Spartan™ FPGA families. The encoder provides a highly integrated and cost effective solution which designers can utilize in a wide variety of video-based applications such as broadcast, video conferencing, video surveillance, and aerospace and defense applications. The solution will be demonstrated by Xilinx in hall 4, stand number 4.436.at the International Broadcaster Conference (IBC) in Amsterdam September 8-13, 2005.
“The feature sets of the Virtex and Spartan FPGA families made Xilinx the obvious choice for collaboration as they provide the ideal platform to implement the highly complex algorithms required for High Definition H.264 encoding,” said Martyn Riley, Managing Director and CEO of 4i2i. “The flexibility of Xilinx FPGAs allowed 4i2i to develop fully productized intellectual property which fits in a single cost-effective FPGA device and includes an H.264 HD encoder, video scaler, noise reducer, camera, and host interface.”
“4i2i is a great example of Xilinx’ third party eco-system at work. 4i2i’s highly focused team have developed a cutting edge H.264 solution which is a hot commodity in today’s market.” said David Squires, Senior Director of DSP Marketing at Xilinx.
4i2i has been able to use their vast codec development experience to create the highly optimized encoder solution which can be implemented in a wide variety of high definition video systems. The 4i2i High Definition H.264/AVC encoder is available today in a single chip format for both Virtex-4 and Spartan platforms and can be viewed at the Xilinx IBC booth in hall 4 - stand number 4.436.
