Cypress Delivers Media Transfer Protocol Reference Design For Portable Media Players
New Design Enables Quick and Economical Digital Rights Management Implementation
SAN JOSE, Calif., September 28, 2005 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), the market leader in USB, today announced a new reference design that provides everything a platform designer needs to comply with Microsoft's new Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) for data transport using Cypress's EZ-USB FX2LP(TM) high-speed USB 2.0 controller, including both software and hardware modules. MTP is the underlying transport technology that enables digital rights management for portable media players (PMPs).
The Cypress reference design (CY4619) utilizes Ultra-Direct Memory Access (UDMA) technology to increase read/write speeds to and from hard disk drives (HDDs). It includes USB generic driver software with Mass Storage Class (MSC) and MTP support, and device firmware for Cypress's EZ-USB FX2LP (CY7C68015A) controller. The free CY4619 reference design incorporates Texas Instruments' TMS320DA255 DSP-based Raga reference design for portable hard disk drive (HDD) digital music players.
"Our use of UDMA allows us to produce the only reference design that provides MTP support without sacrificing performance," said Matthew Branda, marketing manager for Cypress's USB products. "With content owners increasingly demanding digital rights management in portable media devices, Cypress's solution addresses a key concern in the growing media player market."
TI's TMS320DA255 DSP-based Raga reference design is a turnkey, manufacturable reference design for portable hard-disk drive-based music players. It includes a 5-GB HDD, integrated FM tuner, microphone and USB host. Devices using this design can play up to 15 hours of music in MP3, WMA and WAV formats, as well as display JPEG and MPEG-4 photos.
"Combining the world-class performance of the EZ-USB FX2LP, Cypress's driver for MTP, and the TI reference design creates a development environment that enables quick and easy implementation of next-generation PMP players," said Bassil El-Kadi, product manager in Cypress's Consumer and Computation Division.
