MIPS Technologies, Inc. Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2001 Financial Results
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Oct. 12, 2000--MIPS Technologies, Inc., (Nasdaq:MIPS - news, MIPSB - news) a leading provider of industry standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and network applications, today reported financial results for its first fiscal quarter ended September 30, 2000.
Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2001 was $21.1 million, an increase of 11 percent compared with the same quarter a year ago, which represents a 60 percent growth in total revenue when royalties from Nintendo are excluded. Contract revenue was $12.2 million, an increase of 71 percent compared to $7.1 million in the comparable period in fiscal 2000. Royalties were $8.9 million, a decrease of 25 percent compared to $11.8 million in the same quarter a year ago due to lower royalties from Nintendo 64 video game products. Royalties excluding royalties from Nintendo 64 were $3.4 million, an increase of 30 percent compared to $2.6 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Net income for the first quarter of fiscal 2001 was $5.6 million compared to $5.1 million for the same quarter a year ago. The diluted net income per share for the first quarter of fiscal 2001 was $0.14 compared to $0.13 for the same quarter a year ago.
``This is our best ever September quarter revenue and EPS results,'' said Casey Eichler, Chief Financial Officer. ``Continued strong licensing activities led the way. We have had consecutive quarterly increases in license revenues since our IPO, and this quarter the growth was 19 percent over our previous record last quarter helping offset declines in Nintendo 64 royalties.''
``Record licensing revenues indicate the growing acceptance of MIPS Technologies products,'' said John Bourgoin, Chairman and CEO. ``We announced six new license agreements during the quarter. Our agreement with Gemplus is perhaps the most significant. Gemplus is the leader in the smart card market. The smart card market today is 1.5 billion units. As such, this is the largest single unit opportunity for MIPS cores. Additionally, initial silicon runs are in fabrication on the MIPS R20K product, the highest performance licensable core available. Success with this product will demonstrate the capability of our design team to create very high performance advanced processors. Also during the quarter, our MIPS Alliance Program, which provides a range of tools and applications, grew to 34 announced partners. This kind of support coupled with the wide range of processors available from MIPS Technoloies and its licensees further solidifies MIPS as the architecture of choice in the marketplace.''
