Titan Subsidiary LinCom Wireless Obtains Key Software Intellectual Property License for Next Generation LAN Chipset From Tality Corporation
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11 -- The Titan Corporation (NYSE: TTN) today announced that LinCom Wireless, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Titan, developing products for the wireless local, personal, and home area markets, has licensed from Tality Corporation a key component -- IEEE 802.11-compliant Medium Access Control (MAC) software -- for its next generation chipset. The Tality software will allow LinCom to develop a fully integrated next-generation 802.11a chipset that will combine both LinCom's state-of-the-art baseband solution with the power of proven MAC software from Tality. LinCom Wireless will combine its own critical protocol intellectual property with the Tality MAC software in an effort to be one of the first to market with a complete solution, which supports the QoS and security features necessary to enable bandwidth intensive real-time multimedia distribution. Tality is the largest independent provider of engineering services and intellectual property for the design of complex electronic systems and integrated circuits.
With one OEM customer already planning to use LinCom's 802.11b chipset in an upcoming product line, LinCom Wireless is currently working with industry partners on wireless chipset and system designs based upon the IEEE 802.11a standard, the next generation standard that will operate in the 5GHz frequencies at data rates of up to 54 Mbps. The 802.11a standard is expected to be a widely adopted standard for future home networking products. These products include digital audio products, network game consoles, digital video recorders, and digital music players. According to industry reports, these applications together provide a potential market of more than 300 million units by 2004. The current 802.11 standard, 802.11b, already has a dominant position in the enterprise wireless local area networking market and comprises a significant portion of the home area network market as well.
``The ability to license MAC software is a significant milestone for LinCom Wireless,'' said Vince Hu, President of LinCom Wireless. ``We will now be able to speed up our development goals for our 802.11a chipset, add proven technology to our chipset solutions, and be able to offer a fully integrated baseband and software solution.''
``Using Tality's software IP enables LinCom to leverage our 802.11 technology expertise to reduce its time to market, increase project predictability, and focus more of its own effort on chipset design. They simultaneously maintain control of the product development and ownership of the outcome,'' said Brent Hudson, vice president and general manager of Tality's Wireless and Multimedia Design Group.
In addition to its 802.11 investment, LinCom has also been active in developing a proposal for the 802.15.3 high data rate personal area network standard. The IEEE has established the 802.15 Committee to define wireless personal area network connectivity standards for short-range portable devices such as digital cameras, Personal Digital Assistants, and MP3 players. The committee has already adopted the Bluetooth standard as its first generation standard. The 802.15.3 standard will be the next generation wireless Personal Area Network standard that will support higher data rates of up to 40 Mbps to facilitate the transfer of multimedia content among portable devices. LinCom's proposal for both the MAC and physical layers of the 802.15.3 standard is one of the proposals currently being considered by the 802.15 Committee.
