Raytac selects the Nordic Semiconductor nRF24XX chipset to deliver low power, omni-directional wireless control to its PCMCIA-sized presentation controller and laser pointer (PP2400)
The Raytac PP2400 is the first product of its type to offer omni-directional wireless control at indoor ranges of up to 30 meters (100 feet) between laptop and user. The user simply inserts a USB receiver into the laptop and the plug-and-play product is ready to use. No additional software is required.
"The compact packaging of the nRF24XX and low external component count enabled us to achieve the ultra slim PCMCIA form factor of the PP2400," says Afu Chang, Managing Director of Raytac Corporation. "In addition, Nordic's proven expertise in both low power wireless and reliable product performance - including robust interference resistance from other 2.4 GHz devices operating in the vicinity - clearly made the nRF24XX the optimum solution on the market today for such a low power, cost critical, volume consumer product."
The Nordic Semiconductor nRF24XX product line is an ideal solution for wireless Human Interface Devices (HIDs), such as the Raytac presenter. Notable previous application design wins include wireless PC keyboards and mice, combined traditional form-factor wireless PC mice laser presenters, intelligent sports equipment (e.g. watches that can measure a user's heart rate via a wireless sensor) and wireless computer gaming controllers.
"Raytac continues to be a focus partner for Nordic Semiconductor in the PC peripheral application market," adds Chim Chan, Chinese Area Sales Manager at Nordic Semiconductor. "The PP2400 builds on the wide range of previous Raytac 2.4 GHz wireless communication applications where Nordic technology has been selected because it is the market leading solution."

About Nordic Semiconductor ASA
Nordic Semiconductor (formerly Nordic VLSI) is a Norwegian fabless semiconductor company focussing on delivering world-best wireless communication solutions in the licence-free 2.4 GHz band. The company, which was originally founded in 1983 as a traditional ASIC design house, produces both standard products and custom SoCs. It also offers development services for other companies to access its world leading, in-house RF/mixed-signal design and advanced back-end/physical engineering expertise.
Standard products are based on the company's ultra compact and low power nRF24xx range of 2.4GHz transceiver and transmitter devices aimed at applications such as wireless audio (e.g. MP3 and portable CD player headphones and PC speakers), gamepads, keyboards/mice and sports equipment. The latest nRF24L01 family, for instance, is targeted at ultra-low cost and power applications such as wireless desktops and intelligent (e.g. wristwatch-based) sports equipment.
The custom/consulting services division derives its revenue from working with specific customers to integrate Nordic's wireless solutions into the customer's ASIC. Nordic often then continues to manufacture the chip in the long-term for the customer.
The data conversion business area develops and sells IP for use within in-house projects, third-party ASIC design and standard products. The products are leading edge ADCs and DACs for use in areas such as digital photography, WLANs and video.
Nordic's products are all manufactured in ultra modern semiconductor process technologies through strong relationships with world-best manufacturing facilities. Sales are primarily made through a carefully selected worldwide distribution network. The company has offices in Trondheim and Oslo, Norway, Hong Kong and Korea, and is listed on the Norwegian Stock Exchange (OSX: NOD). All operations are managed according to the ISO 9001:2000-approved quality assurance system.
