Industry Leaders License Latest StarCore Technology
AUSTIN, Texas--May 10, 2006--StarCore announced today that Agere Systems and Freescale are licensees for the all new StarCore(TM) SC3000 family of processors cores. Agere and Freescale are early adopters of the SC3000 technology and have been instrumental in providing feedback to the StarCore design team to ensure the technology is optimized for their intended markets including mobile multimedia, wireless handsets, infrastructure, consumer and wireless baseband applications. The new SC3000 family of processor cores is based on the StarCore V5 architecture announced on October 24, 2005.
"We think working with the StarCore team in the early stages helped both teams. Our desire was to drive higher frequency and performance for communication applications while at the same time, see significant improvement in power consumption for handheld applications. StarCore has produced a product that accomplishes both," said Rick Morris, VP engineering at Freescale. "The flexibility of the architecture assures us continued competitive advantage in the communications arena for years to come."
"Agere's customers are making huge investments in software development activities, and they are rightly demanding that the software investment they make today can be reusable in future generations of products. An aggressive roadmap featuring binary compatibility was a core requirement for us, and the SC3000 family illustrates StarCore's solid commitment to this strategy," said Ghassan Habelrih, VP of Product Marketing, Agere Systems. "In addition, we believe that advancing the state of the art in software development environments, compiler technology, and debugging tools adds a lot of value for our customers and we are pleased to be working closely with the StarCore team in these efforts."
"We are especially pleased about working with experienced industry leaders like Agere Systems and Freescale Semiconductor to assist us in our product definition of the new StarCore SC3000 family of cores and subsystems," said Amnon Rom, VP engineering and GM of StarCore. "Working with early adopters is critical to success of any technology and Freescale and Agere have provided valuable feedback to help fine tune our new products."
Performance
StarCore optimized both the architecture and the implementation of the SC3000 family products, to be scalable to 1GHz+ operating frequencies in 90 nm high performance processes. The SC3000 family of processors continues to improve upon the video acceleration introduced in the SC2000 family making it ideally suited to the latest multimedia applications, such as high-quality, real-time video encoding and decoding. At the same time, the architecture allows customers concerned with longer battery life to implement their SC3000 processor-based products in an extremely low-power process and still have a performance margin never achieved before with a processor offering this level of DSP capability.
Availability
The SC3000 processor family will be commercially available for licensing in October of this year when StarCore announces specifics of the individual licensable processor subsystems. It is expected that the new SC3000 family of subsystems will follow the same configurations as the now industry standard, SC1000 and SC2000 families of licensable processors.
