Fujitsu Introduces Its Mobile WiMAX System-on-Chip Solution and Roadmap
Company Will Deliver to Fixed and Mobile Access Markets Through 'Total WiMAX Program'
WCA, WASHINGTON -- June 29, 2006 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today announced its Mobile WiMAX System-on-Chip (SoC) solution and roadmap at the Annual Wireless Communications Association Conference 2006. This highly integrated one-chip MAC and PHY mixed signal baseband SoC is designed to optimize both performance and power consumption using Fujitsu's 90nm process technology, and is especially well-suited for PC cards and mobile devices.
The Fujitsu mobile WiMAX SoC is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.16e-2005 Mobile WiMAX standard. The company's first generation mobile WiMAX SoC includes the following features:
- Highly integrated, scalable1024 Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) OFDMA PHY and full MAC processors
- Adaptive modulation schemes including 64QAM, 16QAM, QPSK, and BPSK
- Interface for MIMO RF modules
- 90nm with low-leakage process technology
- Small-footprint FBGA package
"As the broadband wireless market continues to gain momentum, we'll see fixed and mobile WiMAX networks co-exist throughout the world," said Keith Horn, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "To continue the effort from fixed to mobility, Fujitsu has developed a highly integrated baseband processor for mobile WiMAX applications. We believe the time is now right to open a new window of opportunity for our systems customers and new prospects in the WiMAX mobility market."
Fujitsu has built a worldwide base of WiMAX systems customers for its powerful fixed broadband wireless SoC, as well as a growing deployment footprint. Its delivery has been on time, on target and on specification.
While Fujitsu supports a range of applications in the 802.16-2004 market, the company believes that fixed solutions will be complemented, not displaced, by emerging WiMAX mobility solutions. Applications such as wireless VPN, disaster recovery, wireless backhaul and broadcast-quality streaming media will continue to be best served by fixed WiMAX. High-speed vehicular data sharing, consumer-in-motion and mobile appliance connectivity will require mobile WiMAX (see a related presentation given at the Broadband Wireless World on April 28, 2006).
"It is essential that the Fujitsu 'Total WiMAX Program' fulfill existing fixed needs and new requirements for mobility," stated Keith Horn. "We will move forward to deliver innovation, quality and a long-term commitment for end-to-end solutions in both markets."
First-Generation Fujitsu WiMAX SoC and Availability
Fujitsu's mobile WiMAX SoC will be designed into subscriber systems that will be deployed along with 802.16e-2005 compliant base stations in supporting end to end mobile wireless networks. One of Fujitsu's key differentiators is its proven ability in offering networking products ranging from the core and edge networks to the last mile. Fujitsu's Total WiMAX Program will adopt a similar market-engagement strategy by offering a rich line-up of products that will enable mobile operators and market-oriented service providers to quickly deploy their networks and realize time-to-revenue benefits.
"Our mobile WiMAX SoC development and customer evaluation is already underway, and will proceed through the third quarter of 2006. This phase will encompass final identification of target applications and feature sets for early adopter and lead customers, as well as architectural collaboration and chip design finalization," said Keith Horn. "Our delivery timetable and feature sets are entirely market-driven. They match the users' readiness for WiMAX mobility. This announcement enables our systems customers to synch up their trial and deployment timelines with our SoC availability."
Engineering samples will be available in 1Q 2007. Systems using the Fujitsu mobile WiMAX SoC will be submitted to the WiMAX Forum for certification in 3Q 2007.
Fujitsu plans multiple releases to match customers' needs. Its initial release will provide the broadband SoC to deliver MIMO Wave 2 certification compliance. Second and third releases will follow to support full mobility, VoIP and multimedia applications over mobile appliances.
