W&W Communications Announces Multi-Channel, Low-Latency Video Transcoder Suite for IMS Gateway Applications
Update: Cavium Networks buys W&W Communications (Nov. 2008)
W&W Communications' transcoder suite brings optimized channel/watt benefits for multi-format transcoding of H.264, H.263+, H.263 and MPEG-4 SP streams
Freescale Technology Forum, Orlando, Florida, July 26, 2006 – W&W Communications, Inc. unveiled today its multi-channel, multi-format, low-latency video transcoder suite for wired and wireless IMS gateway applications. The suite is available on the MSC8144 and MSC8122 digital signal processors based on StarCore® technology from Freescale and supports transcoding among H.264, H.263+, H.263 and MPEG-4 SP video streams. The transcoder suite provides telecom equipment manufacturers with a flexible, DSP-based solution for implementation of video stream format conversion support in core infrastructure equipment for wired and wireless multi-media subscriber services.
“The IMS core infrastructure market is set to take off in 2007 and forecasted to show aggressive growth, reaching $14.1 billion by 2010, according to a recent IDC report” said Ron Allard, VP Business Development at W&W Communications. “Our video transcoder suite is right on target to meet forecasted IMS gateway demand for multi-media wired and wireless subscriber services.”
The multi-channel and scalable architecture of the transcoders results in an optimized channel/watt density for large-scale mobile and non-mobile multimedia subscriber services, such as 2-way video-conferencing, video mail, mobile TV, place shifting, IPTV and video surveillance. Included support for RTP, H.245 commands, CIF/QCIF/D1 and custom resolutions, transsizing, transrating, error resilience and CBR/VBR rate control makes the transcoder suite the most feature-rich set of transcoders in the market for multi-media IMS gateway applications.
“Powered by quad StarCore DSP engines, the MSC8144 and MSC8122 are extremely powerful digital signal processors,” said Altaf Hussain, media segment manager for Freescale’s Digital Systems Division. “These processors are highly suitable for multi-media IMS gateway implementations and the high channel/Watt density achieved by W&W Communication’s optimized transcoder implementation on our processors is expected to be extremely attractive to telecom equipment manufacturers, who are constantly looking for the highest achievable channel-density.”
Next to the transcoder suite, W&W Communications offers the BC-264-FS, a highly optimized, multi-channel, low-latency H.264 encoder/decoder, on the Freescale MSC8144 and MSC8122 signal processors. This makes W&W Communications a one-stop destination for DSP-based H.264 products for video-centric IMS gateway applications.
Pricing & Availability
The transcoders ship as an SDK, which includes Freescale SmartDSP OS compliant object code libraries and a sample application framework. The SDK allows OEMs to rapidly integrate the transcoders into their IMS gateway products. Pricing on license and royalty fees is available upon request.
