Successful collaboration with STMicroelectronics delivers industry-leading high volume, low-cost configuration solution
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- August 9, 2006 –Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world’s leading provider of programmable logic solutions, today announced that it has delivered over 10 million units of its industry leading Platform Flash configuration devices, a significant milestone in its ongoing partnership with STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM). Xilinx Platform Flash PROMs provide drop-in configuration for all Xilinx FPGAs, including its flagship high-performance Virtex™-5 Platform FPGA and low-cost Spartan™-3 FPGA families. The Platform Flash family offers designers a low-cost, high density, in-system programmability, a small footprint, and industry standard interfaces in a single device.
Platform Flash has value added features that minimize the complexity of design FPGA configuration. For example, Danaher Motion uses the XCF02S two megabit Platform Flash PROM to enable field upgrading of the Xilinx Spartan-3 XC3S400 control logic for their high performance servo motor drives. “The Platform Flash PROM chip with integrated ISP capability allowed adding this feature with just a few gates through an existing serial port,” according to David Colson, Senior Design at Danaher Motion.
Collaboration of Industry Leaders Benefits FPGA Designers
Xilinx began its design collaboration with flash memory leader STMicroelectronics in 2002 to develop its single PROM family with all the high-performance features needed to configure a wide range of FPGAs at a very low cost. Xilinx Platform Flash PROMs provide customers with a competitively priced high performance, system-level drop-in solution that reduces the amount of board space required for configuration, and offers a complete 1 Mb to 32 Mb PROM density solutions. Further details on the benefits of the Xilinx Platform Flash solution whitepaper is available at http://direct.xilinx.com/bvdocs/whitepapers/wp253.pdf.
“This milestone is testimony to the joint execution of our engineering teams to deliver a best-in class-solution,” said Patrick Dorsey, product line director of the Configuration Solutions Group at Xilinx. “The Platform Flash product line allowed us to leverage STMicroelectronics’ high volume, top quality Flash manufacturing to provide our FPGA customers with a feature rich PROM at a competitive price.”
“This success is directly attributable to our collaboration with Xilinx in defining and designing an optimized feature set at attractive price points for the FPGA design community,” said Dr. Anirban Roy, technical program manager for the Wireless and High Density Flash Division at STMicroelectronics. “We combined our expertise in non-volatile memories and flash technology with Xilinx’ expertise in configuration devices to deliver a high volume, low cost, high quality product.”
Under the terms of the collaboration, Xilinx retains the sole rights for marketing and selling the Platform Flash devices and STMicroelectronics provides a turnkey manufacturing solution.
Availability
The Platform Flash Family is available today with support from 1 Megabit to 32 Mega-bits of storage across the XCF01S, XCF02S, XCF04S, XCF08P, XCF16P, and XCF32P devices. Xilinx ISE development tools support the entire Platform Flash family. Programming support is available from Xilinx Desktop Programming hardware and from a broad range of third party programming, automatic test equipment, and boundary scan solution providers.
