Ikanos Communications Selects MIPS Technologies MIPS32 24KEc Processor Cores for Next-Generation Broadband SoCs
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., - August 21, 2006 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, networking, personal entertainment, communications and business applications, today announced that Ikanos Communications has selected the MIPS32® 24KEc™ processor core to power advanced solutions for next-generation, fiber-fast broadband access. Targeted applications will include Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), home networking, SOHO and enterprise networking-all explosive sectors within the burgeoning broadband arena.
Industry analyst firm Infonetics Research predicts that annual broadband CPE revenue will reach $8.6 billion by 2009, as service providers continue to bundle voice, data, video, and wireless services in triple and quadruple play offerings to attract new customers and reduce churn among existing customers.
"In highly competitive markets, it is critical to provide our customers with feature-rich solutions that keep pace with industry demand," said Dean Westman, general manager of network products for Ikanos Communications. "The performance of the MIPS 24KEc core will enable us to rapidly design and deliver a range of advanced SoCs for interactive broadband."
"Ikanos is a recognized leader in broadband access SoC design," said Brad Holtzinger, vice president of worldwide sales for MIPS Technologies. "We are delighted to welcome Ikanos to our rapidly growing array of 24KE core licensees and look forward to helping them build their suite of progressive MIPS-Based designs."
About the MIPS32® 24KE™ Family
The MIPS32® 24KE™ core family leverages the high performance 24K™ microarchitecture while incorporating the MIPS® DSP Application Specific Extension (ASE). These instructions provide signal processing performance of up to 3x over a range of embedded applications compared to RISC implementations without the DSP ASE. The 24KE family provides very efficient DSP capability while significantly reducing overall SoC die area, cost and power consumption.
