Xilinx Demonstrates Industry's First Scalable 3-D Graphics Hardware Accelerator for Automotive Applications
New OpenGL ES 1.1 Based logi3D IP Targeted Specifically for Xilinx Automotive FPGAs
LAS VEGAS --, Jan. 8, 2007 -- At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, Xilinx, Inc. (Nasdaq: XLNX), the world's leading programmable logic supplier, demonstrated the automotive industry's first 3-D hardware accelerator intellectual property (IP) core targeted specifically for its automotive line of XA (Xilinx Automotive) FPGAs. The logi3D IP core was developed in collaboration with Xilinx Alliance Program participant Xylon, a leading independent design house. The logi3D IP core from Xylon for OpenGL(R) ES API provides Tier One automotive electronic suppliers with a parameterizable and scalable solution, allowing flexibility for customized graphics applications based on specific OEM customer requirements. Xilinx is demonstrating the solution at this week's CES, January 8-12, Booth #35580, South Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The new 3-D graphics solution builds on the success of the previous 2-D graphics IP core, providing a scalable path so customers only pay for what they need. The single screen solution is comprised of a 3-D hardware acceleration IP core, a Xilinx MicroBlaze(TM) processor and display controller, all running on a Xilinx automotive qualified Spartan-3(TM) XA device. Overlay, texturing, shading, and many other features of the core can be customized quickly and efficiently.
High-end 3-D navigation, hybrid and reconfigurable clusters, multi-use center stack displays, and automotive infotainment require enhanced processing power as well as automotive qualified devices to make these emerging applications a reality. Strategy Analytics expects these markets to grow from approximately 80 million units in 2006 (original equipment and aftermarket) to nearly 100 million units in 2012.
"Complete solutions, scalability, time-to-market and quality are all requirements in the automotive electronics segment," said Kevin Tanaka, Worldwide Automotive Marketing and Product Planning manager in the Automotive Division at Xilinx. "Xilinx Automotive solutions provide end-to-end support including IP, flexible interfacing, and processors all working on automotive qualified FPGAs"
"Our goal is to provide a full-featured 3-D capability that builds on our successful 2-D graphics core," said Davor Kovacec, Xylon CEO. "This solution enables the customer to integrate new features for emerging 3-D automotive navigation and infotainment applications, while maintaining the ability to scale the size and complexity of the core based on the actual customer specification requirements."
Availability
A production version of the IP core will be available from Xylon in March of 2007. Visit http://www.logicbricks.com for more information.
