Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX Graphics Accelerator Technology Used in Texas Instruments OMAP 3 Platform
3GSM, Barcelona, February 13th 2007 -- Imagination Technologies Group plc (LSE:IMG; "Imagination") – a leader in mobile multimedia technologies – reports that Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), the leading wireless semiconductor company, is using Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator technology for its next generation application processor family, the OMAP™ 3 architecture.
With support for OpenGL® ES 2.0, the OMAP 3 platform delivers advanced 3D graphics for multimedia-rich handsets that rival handheld gaming devices. The OMAP3430 with PowerVR SGX provides a significant increase in graphics performance over the previous generation of processors, setting new benchmarks for graphics performance.
This announcement extends the successful relationship between the two companies, which has seen TI use PowerVR in several OMAP 2 and OMAP-Vox™ solutions including the OMAP2420, OMAP2430 and OMAPV2230 products. PowerVR SGX will initially be used in the OMAP3430 and OMAP3420 processors.
"Texas Instruments OMAP 3 platform elevates the mobile graphics experience to rival handheld gaming devices,” says Alain Mutricy, vice president and general manager, Cellular Systems Solutions, Texas Instruments. “We have developed a strong relationship with Imagination Technologies to deliver best-in-class graphics capabilities for the next generation of multimedia-rich handsets."
Says Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies: "We expect TI’s OMAP 3 platform to follow the success of OMAP 2 platform with many leading OEMs and ODMs, and we expect to further extend our leading position in graphics for mobile phones through this relationship."
TI’s OMAP3430 processor, a complete system solution including integrated software and support for the advanced graphic technologies, integrates support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG® graphic standards. This platform marks the convergence of the software tools for mobile and console game development environments, allowing one game to be created and used across all platforms, including mobile phones, gaming consoles, portable gaming devices and PCs. With the ability to expand across gaming platforms, the mobile gaming market has a potential market footprint that is much larger than that of the portable gaming console market.
