Imagination Technologies Shows Next Generation of Mobile Graphics Technologies at GDC 2007
March 5, 2007 -- Imagination Technologies – a leader in mobile multimedia technologies – is demonstrating its OpenGL ES 2.0 tools and SDK at GDC 2007 in San Francisco. Copies of the SDK will be available to developers at the show and for download from www.powervrinsider.com.
The PowerVR OpenGL ES 2.0 SDK enables games developers to begin work on games and applications using OpenGL ES 2.0, the API for programmable 3D shader-graphics pipelines, and targeting PowerVR SGX, the next-generation graphics architecture for mobile and embedded devices.
At the show Imagination Technologies’ Kristof Beets will present an hour long session titled “Content Creation using OpenGL ES 2.0 - Recommendations for Mobile Devices” at 12pm on March 8th (Khronos Show Floor Theater, booth 260).
OpenGL ES 2.0 and PowerVR SGX will bring significant advancements to mobile gaming, user interfaces, entertainment and navigation, building on the outstanding capabilities of the PowerVR MBX graphics technologies already adopted by manufacturers for the majority of current 3D enabled devices.
Says Tony King-Smith, VP Marketing, Imagination Technologies: “PowerVR SGX is a revolutionary architecture which will ensure that our technology continues to drive the mobile graphics ‘Revolution’ – not just an ‘evolution’.”
Imagination Technologies will be demonstrating a PowerVR SGX OpenGL ES 2.0 silicon device showing a variety of advanced shader effects and already running existing advanced game content.
Also on Imagination Technologies’ section of the Khronos stand GDC visitors will see the advanced gaming and multimedia capabilities of the latest mobile phone handsets as well as new and in development content running on TI’s OMAP2420 development system showing PowerVR enabled acceleration of OpenGL ES 1.x, OpenVG, Java and Adobe Flash content.
Continues King-Smith: “While OpenGL ES 1.1 content can be run in software on some mobile devices, albeit much slower, it is not viable to contemplate OpenGL ES 2.0 rendering in software. Therefore, we’re delighted to be working closely with our semiconductor licensing partners to deliver the first commercial high volume OpenGL ES 2.0 capable chips to the market. We're also delivering the tools today – in the form of our OpenGL ES 2.0 SDK – that are needed by developers to exploit the amazing capabilities OpenGL ES 2.0 acceleration offers in a mobile platform.”
Imagination Technologies’ will feature demonstrations from software developers including: Acrodea, Aspyr Media, Digital Legends, Futuremark, Firemint, Great Ape Software, Ideaworks3D, Kishonti, Omegame, Polarbit, Vizrt and Warelex.
Imagination Technologies offers a comprehensive array of licensable Intellectual Property (IP) targeted towards System-on-Chip (SoC) semiconductor devices for mobile multimedia applications such as: smart and feature phones; multimedia computers; mobile TV; personal media players; and Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC).
Imagination works closely with its licensees, which include many of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers and some of the most innovative new start-ups, to create advanced solutions driving the future of mobile multimedia.
Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR MBX is the de facto standard for mobile 3D, 2D and vector graphics acceleration, being used by the majority of the top ten semiconductor companies for their mobile graphics solutions.
The PowerVR SGX programmable Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) family targets next generation mobile embedded multimedia processing. PowerVR SGX enables a powerful and flexible solution for all forms of multimedia processing, including 3D/2D/vector graphics, advanced anti-aliasing, video codecs, and image processing.
PowerVR MBX and SGX are complemented by the PowerVR Insider ecosystem programme, which provides comprehensive support for developers, publishers and middleware developers and extensive co-marketing opportunities for OEMs, ODMs, content developers and semiconductor companies.
