MIPS Technologies Licenses MIPS64 Architecture to STMicroelectronics
Adds Top Ten Semiconductor Company to Customer Roster
BEIJING, CHINA, — March 28, 2007 — MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, networking, personal entertainment, communications and business applications, today announced that STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) has licensed MIPS Technologies’ 64-bit architecture for its cooperation with the Chinese Institute of Computing Technologies.
“The MIPS64 architecture has long been a preferred choice for major semiconductor companies around the world for its performance, cost and scalability,” said John Bourgoin, president and chief executive officer at MIPS Technologies. “We’re delighted that ST has joined our exclusive network of architectural licensees, and look forward to teaming with them as they continue building out their global strategy for innovative computing solutions.”
The MIPS64 architecture provides the essential foundation for robust, high-performance MIPS® processors and offers upward compatibility to the MIPS32® architecture. MIPS Technologies began developing its 64-bit processor architecture more than a decade ago, based on the leading-edge RISC (reduced instruction set computer) research of MIPS co-founder John Hennessy. Today, more than a dozen leading companies, including, Broadcom Corporation, Cavium Networks, Raza Microelectronics, Inc., NEC Electronics, Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation, have successfully deployed the technology in a wide array of consumer and networking applications. Leveraging MIPS’ software ecosystem as well as their own design strengths, these companies are delivering innovative MIPS-Based™ solutions that further extend the reach of the MIPS architecture around the globe.
