Xilinx 65nm Virtex-5 LX Selected for Hitachi Kokusai Electric Industrial Cameras
Combining MicroBlaze soft processor with high-performance FPGA results in compact, high-resolution camera with reduced power consumption and lower price
SAN JOSE, Calif., and TOKYO, Japan, May 15, 2007 - Xilinx Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world’s leading provider of programmable logic solutions, today announced that its 65nm Virtex™-5 LX FPGA has been selected for the KP Series of industrial cameras manufactured by Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. (TSE, OSE: 6756). Hitachi Kokusai Electric is among a growing number of industrial networking manufacturers to realize the density and power advantages of Xilinx high-performance Virtex-5 FPGAs to achieve ultimate design flexibility and faster time-to-market.
Hitachi Kokusai Electric’s latest high resolution, fast frame rate KP Series (range of seven types, 14 models) offers superior image quality, efficiency, and speed. It is suitable for a broad range of industrial needs because of its compact size and ease of operation/installation. The KP Series design also leverages Xilinx’ 32-bit MicroBlaze™ soft processor to enable its high-performance image processing function. The MicroBlaze processor plays a key role in achieving the KP Series high resolution (5 million pixels), as well as its small size and image correction features such as the color camera’s white balance and independent six-color masking.
According to a spokesperson at the Broadcasting and Video Systems Division, Hitachi Kokusai Electric, “Industrial cameras are used in a variety of applications from surveillance camera systems to factory automation and test equipment, medical, biotechnology, materials, and integrated transport systems. We need to bring new products to market in a timely manner if we are to respond to meet our customer’s increasingly diverse needs amid the trend toward smaller cameras with high resolution and sophisticated functionality. The use of Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs has enabled us to develop and ship products ahead of our competitors. The Xilinx Virtex-5 LX device offers large usable gate capacity, low power consumption, and small package area, precisely meeting our development requirements.”
Xilinx will exhibit the system incorporating the Virtex-5 LX device at the 10th Embedded Systems Expo & Conference (ESEC) to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight on May 16–18, 2007.
