V-ONE and NEC Computers Inc. Announce Agreement to Bundle SmartGate VPN in MobilePro Windows CE Devices
V-ONE's SmartGate VPN for Windows CE And NEC's MobilePro Handheld PC Devices Offer Business-Essential Mobile Security for the Enterprise
GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND, April 28, 2000 -- V-ONE® Corporation (Nasdaq: VONE), a leading provider of client/server Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), today announced the company has signed an agreement with NEC Computers Inc. in which NEC Computers will bundle V-ONE's SmartGate® VPN in each NEC MobilePro? device. By including VPN protection for NEC Computers' MobilePro Handheld PC Pros with Microsoft's Windows® CE operating system (Nasdaq: MSFT), the two companies are targeting specific sectors, most notably health care, to extend the enterprise with increased end user convenience, while providing extended functionality, mobility and security.
NEC Computers' line of MobilePro products extends the easy-to-use interface of Windows to handheld PCs and provides access to "pocket versions" of programs already familiar to users, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook® , PowerPoint® and Internet Explorer. MobilePro handheld PCs are becoming critical components of enterprise deployments today thanks to important features such as color touch-screens and real-time wireless capability.
SmartGate for Windows CE provides handheld PCs, connected wirelessly or via conventional network cables, protection for critical applications with a level of security that was previously available only for desktop and laptop PCs. SmartGate's mutual and two-factor authentication, fine-grained access control and Triple DES (Digital Encryption Standard) encryption allow an organization's most sensitive data to be shared securely with users in the field.
To provide widespread secure application access for mobile devices, SmartGate for Windows CE and NEC Computers' MobilePro handheld PCs work with the ICA® Client from Citrix® Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTXS) that enables "thin client" computing. NEC Computers also includes the Citrix ICA client for Windows CE with all MobilePro Handheld PCs.
"The need for wireless application access protected with high security is strong and growing, particularly in important areas such as health care," said David D. Dawson, CEO of V-ONE Corporation. "As an example, physicians can use SmartGate for Windows CE to immediately access new lab test results, and change medications accordingly, from virtually anywhere. Together, V-ONE and NEC Computers enable enterprises to tap into the broad capabilities and convenience of handheld PCs without worrying about security."
"The popularity of handheld devices as enterprise deployments is growing steadily, and MobilePro is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this trend," said Duane Cowgill, Sr., Product Manager of MobilePro at NEC Computers. "Security is essential when accessing mission-critical information regardless of the device used, and adding SmartGate CE VPN security to MobilePro will make it an even more compelling enterprise solution."
