S3 and GIGA-BYTE demonstrate the world's first Open Platform OMA BCAST phone
IBC, Amsterdam -- September 10, 2007 – Silicon & Software Systems (S3) and GIGA-BYTE Communications Inc. are demonstrating the world’s first OMA-BCAST mobile TV phone based on an open operating system (OS) at IBC this week. The GIGA-BYTE Gsmart T600 Windows Mobile phone together with S3’s onHandTV™ mobile TV software delivers a compelling mobile TV experience and supports both OMA BCAST and IPDC Mobile TV standards. BCAST is now seen as key to deploying mobile TV services across unicast, multicast and broadcast networks, and is being actively promoted by operators in Europe and Asia. This joint offering is attractive to mobile operators as it enables them to rapidly prototype, trial and deploy branded Mobile TV applications due to the combination of S3’s customisable applications and GIGA-BYTE’s high performance multimedia phone.
S3 has delivered a complete OMA BCAST solution to GIGA-BYTE by integrating their market leading onHandTV™ Mobile TV client with VisualOn’s high quality AV player. onHandTV also supports both Smartcard Profile and DRM Profile solutions from leading security specialists. The phone will be shown later this week at IBC and will demonstrate interoperability with leading infrastructure providers including Thomson, Nokia Siemens Networks, and T-Systems. GIGA-BYTE's GSmart T600 provides digital TV reception of multiple TV signals including DVB-T, DVB-H, T-DMB and DAB. Through superior quality and innovative design, it offers users a superb future-ready mobile TV experience.
Speaking about the demonstration, John O’Brien, CEO, Silicon & Software Systems (S3), said, “We believe that OMA BCAST has a significant role to play in the emerging Mobile DTV market. It allows operators to maximise their return on infrastructure investment, and provides them with a migration path from existing unicast services to broadcast services when required by the market. The Gsmart T600 represents the optimum combination of a high performance phone and integrated receiver, coupled with a flexible OS that allows us to deliver a rapid-prototyping environment to our operator clients,” concluded O’Brien.
“A pioneer in the PDA phone market, GIGA-BYTE Communications is very pleased to demonstrate a complete OMA-BCAST solution to our customers”, said Stanley Jenq, CEO, GIGA-BYTE Communications. “We anticipate huge interest in BCAST and expect to see networks launching in Asia and Europe in mid 2008. By working with S3, a leading provider of IPDC and BCAST mobile DTV solutions, we now have the flexibility to address this rapidly evolving market in a timely fashion with our world leading T600 Mobile TV phone”, said Jenq.
