LSI Logic Announces IEEE 1394 CoreWare(R) Product Family for the Exploding Consumer Communications Market
MILPITAS, Calif., April 24 -- LSI Logic Corporation today announced a high-speed serial bus (1394) CoreWare product line for multimedia applications, consisting of a node controller and a physical layer (PHY) core. The 1394 core enables digital interconnections of home networking multimedia devices. The 1394 CoreWare products, members of LSI Logic's recently announced SureConnex(TM) communications technology interfaces, provide customers with the flexibility to design fully integrated, one-chip 1394 interface solutions. LSI Logic's proven 1394 standards-compliant CoreWare technology, as found in the Sony PlayStation2, allows customers to add robust 1394 capability to their ASIC designs.
``Connectivity is key in the consumer communications marketplace, and 1394 is at the forefront of computer/home electronic convergence, enabling game stations, set-top boxes, digital audio/video equipment, computer peripherals and home networking systems to intercommunicate,'' said Jeff Wolf, vice president of marketing, LSI Logic's Consumer Products Division. ``Our 1394 core technology provides our customers with a totally integrated interface solution proven in silicon.''
System engineers using LSI Logic's 1394 CoreWare products can effectively and efficiently integrate 1394 functionality into their designs. With LSI Logic's CoreWare products, a designer only needs to choose from one of the high-performance ARM® or MIPS® microprocessor cores and add a 1394 core and custom logic to have a fully functional 1394 interface.
LSI Logic's 1394 CoreWare offerings consist of two key building blocks, a 1394a-compliant LINK core and a PHY core, capable of transporting data at 400 Mbps. The ability to integrate a 400 Mbps PHY core is key to fully integrating a 1394 solution and is one of LSI Logic's leading competencies. These 1394 cores are easily interfaced to ARM or MIPS processor cores to build a complete 1394 interface for other digital products. LSI Logic is a total solutions provider for 1394 designs because of its leading manufacturing facilities, its ability to optimize analog designs and its ability to fully integrate a 400 Mbps PHY into the 1394 interface. Customers benefit from a fully customized 1394 design, greatly reducing the cost of their product implementations.
Consumers will also appreciate the ease with which they can connect various digital devices. Consumers will be able to plug and unplug 1394 standard-compliant devices without having to power down and they can connect several devices at once. 1394 is fast and supports true peer-to-peer communication.
To address the rising demand for reliable, high-bandwidth connections to the Internet, LSI Logic Corporation earlier this month announced its family of SureConnex(TM) communications interfaces. LSI Logic's high-speed 1394 interfaces are part of the SureConnex interface family. Also included in the SureConnex family are more than 120 other ASIC interfaces, such as LSI Logic's popular GigaBlaze® serial transceivers, USB, DDR SDRAM, Rambus RAC, PCI-X, SCSI and HyperPHY(TM) cores. These interfaces can be integrated in system-on-a-chip designs to boost the bandwidth between systems, between boards within a system, and among chips on a board, to improve access and delivery of data.
