STMicroelectronics Introduces Next-Generation Single-Chip Automotive Navigation Processor with Embedded GPS
Geneva, October 18,2007 - STMicroelectronics, a world leader in automotive semiconductors, today introduced its new automotive-grade application processor with embedded GPS for navigation and telematics. The Cartesio processor perfectly couples with ST’s GPS RF chip (STA5620), creating a unique offering that significantly reduces the form factor and bill-of-materials with no compromise in performance.
ST’s Cartesio (STA2062) integrates a powerful 32-bit ARM CPU core with a high-sensitivity 32-channel GPS subsystem and a large set of connectivity peripherals, including CAN, USB, UARTs, and SPI. It also provides on-chip high-speed RAM and real-time clock functionality.
Building on ST’s indisputable strengths in automotive technologies and applications, the new Cartesio processor was designed to meet the specific and rigorous demands for quality and reliability in the automotive market.
The Cartesio System-on-Chip device addresses a large variety of applications in the Automotive segment, including OEM and portable navigation devices, vehicle tracking systems, electronic fee collection, and advanced car radio.
“ST’s Cartesio is currently the most integrated solution on the navigation and telematics market, addressing the cost and space constraints with no performance penalty,” said Domenico Rossi, General Manager of ST’s Car Radio and Multimedia Division. “The new application processor with embedded GPS was built using ST’s proprietary GPS technology and designed to meet the most stringent automotive quality standards.”
According to iSuppli, ST is the leading producer of semiconductors for Car Infotainment and a top-three chip supplier to the automotive industry.
ST’s STA2062 is housed in 16 x 16 x 1.4 mm LFBGA packages with a 0.8mm ball pitch to comply with the automotive industry assembly requirements. Samples are available now, with volume production scheduled for April 2008. Pricing for the combination of the STA2062 navigation processor and the STA5620 RF companion chip is below $10 in volume.
