MIPS Technologies Announces Strategic Alliance with NXP Semiconductors for HDMI Technology
Extends Long-time Relationship through New Licensing Agreement To Offer HDMI-based Solution for Digital Home
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - February 20, 2008 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NasdaqGS: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard architectures, processors and analog IP for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that it has extended its strategic relationship with NXP Semiconductors to offer HDMI-based IP solutions for digital home applications, including high-definition DTVs and display units, A/V receivers and set-top boxes.
Under the terms of the agreement, MIPS Technologies will license NXP's advanced HDMI receive technology, which is currently used in the company's DTV ICs. This allows MIPS Technologies to further develop and offer HDMI receive IP solutions in advanced geometries for integration onto SoCs as part of the Analog Business Group's HDMI product portfolio. Additionally, NXP may use these HDMI receive IP solutions from MIPS to further develop its future DTV SoC product line. The agreement also offers rights under NXP's extensive patent portfolio.
"Over the years, MIPS Technologies has enjoyed a long and successful collaboration with NXP, teaming to deliver innovative SoC designs for the digital living room-where both companies have achieved tremendous success," said Mark Tyndall, vice president of business development and corporate relations at MIPS Technologies. "NXP was an early MIPS ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) licensee, has since licensed the popular MIPS32® 4KEc® and 24KE® core families used in next-generation HDTVs and set-top boxes, and recently licensed connectivity solutions from Chipidea. With NXP's impressive history as a consumer IC supplier, MIPS Technologies is pleased to now extend its relationship into additional markets while enabling us to quickly accelerate our entrance into the HDMI SoC IP market."
This week, MIPS Technologies simultaneously announced the industry's first 65nm IP solution for HDMI targeted at low power portable, cellular and digital home applications. MIPS Technologies' leadership and rare expertise in both high-performance analog IP and connectivity IP solutions uniquely positions the company to offer the most comprehensive HDMI IP solution in advanced geometries-including a PHY and digital controller for both HDMI transmit and receive applications. Through integration onto the SoC, the company's IP reduces the overall system cost of implementing HDMI in consumer devices and consumes significantly less power than existing standalone HDMI interface chips commonly used today.
"With Chipidea's leadership in analog IP, we have found a strong development partner for our next-generation IP solutions in our digital consumer SoCs that aim to deliver more digital content with better viewing and listening experiences anytime, anywhere," said Shanthi Padmanabhan, vice president and Innovation & Technology Manager of the Home Business Unit. "Chipidea's reputation and broad expertise to rapidly port advanced IP to third party foundries fully complements our 'fablite' model to remain competitive and innovative with future SoC designs."
