Wipro-NewLogic demonstrates IEEE 1394b Link IP Cores for PC, Consumer, Storage & Automotive applications
April 7, 2008 -- Wipro-NewLogic, the world leader in IEEE 1394 Property cores, demonstrates IEEE 1394b Link IP cores and software stacks for integration in next generation SoCs and FPGAs.
IEEE 1394b (also called FireWire® 800) is ideal for varied applications such as PC / PC Peripherals, Automotives, Storage, Defense & Aerospace and Consumer Electronics. It boasts of speeds of 800 Mbps and beyond, can go up to 100 meters in length and can use plastic optical fiber (POF) cables for reduced transmission losses as well as Copper. The 800 Mbps throughput is a booster for PC & Peripherals, Consumer and Storage applications, whereas the use up to 100 meters of length and use of POF is very well accepted for applications in Defense, Aerospace and in Automotive.
In one of the demonstrations for 1394b OHCI Link, Wipro showcased data transfer between an external Hard Disk Drive and a PC along with simultaneous streaming of video from the external hard disk. The PC was connected to Wipro’s PCI based platform running the IEEE 1394b OHCI IP core along with Window’s IEEE 1394 drivers and a 3rd party PHY. A commercially available HDD with 1394b port was used for actual file transfer between the PC and HDD. The bus speed was measured and shown by 1394 bus analyzer.
Commenting on this, James Snider, Executive Director, 1394 Trade Association said “Wipro has always been a pioneer and reliable vendor for IEEE 1394 IP cores and software stack. Vendors like Wipro bring quality IPs that enable other semiconductor vendors and ODM/OEMs to bring solutions incorporating IEEE 1394 to the market much quicker, cheaper and with low risk”.
“We have provided IEEE 1394 solutions for more than a decade now with more than 70 licenses worldwide. The fact that we can now be a one-stop-shop for IEEE 1394b solutions for different 1394b requirements is a major step forward for our IEEE 1394 program”, said Senthil Murugesan, Vice President and CEO, Wipro-NewLogic. “Our customers have built various solutions using our 1394 IPs, most of which are available as standard part in variety of products in the market today. These are products such as DVD recorders, PC peripherals such as add on cards & printers and Automotive applications like car navigation, to name a few” he added. “Our 1394b IPs are also getting rolled into multiple applications in Storage, Defense and PC Peripherals space.”
