Wi-LAN and ASUSTeK Sign Multi-Year Wi-Fi License Agreement
ASUSTeK represents sixth computer vendor to sign with Wi-LAN
OTTAWA, Canada – May 22, 2008 – Wi-LAN Inc., a leading technology innovation and licensing company, today announced that Taiwan’s ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS) has signed a five-year license agreement relating to Wi-LAN’s Wi-Fi patents. The license provides for the payment of a running royalty on branded ASUS notebook PCs, access points and other wireless products sold in North America and includes a payment in respect of past sales.
ASUS is a leading provider of computer, communications and consumer electronics solutions. With a global staff of more than 8000, ASUS generated revenues of U.S. $6.9 billion in 2007. ASUS’ product portfolio includes desktop PCs, motherboards, wireless solutions, mobile phones and networking devices. ASUS also manufactures a wide range of branded ASUS notebook PCs including the Eee PC ultra-mobile computer. ASUS joins other leading computer vendors including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens, Motion Computing and Portable One, in licensing Wi-LAN’s wireless technology.
ASUS’ North American notebook shipments grew significantly in 2007 due in part to the very successful launch of the Eee PC. In 2007, according to market research firm DisplaySearch LLC, ASUS had the largest increase in global notebook shipments of all major notebook vendors. ASUS has stated its goal is to become one of the top five global notebook PC vendors.
“We are extremely pleased that we were able to negotiate this license agreement with ASUS, the seventh largest and fastest growing notebook computer vendor in the world,” said Bill Middleton, Senior VP, Licensing & General Counsel. “With ASUS' innovative products like the Eee PC and aggressive growth plans, this license agreement could have significant future potential for Wi-LAN.”
Wi-LAN has a large and growing portfolio of more than 290 issued or pending patents.
