Redpine Signals' Lite-Fi(TM) 802.11n SoC is Among the First Devices Certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance(R) for Voice-Over-Wi-Fi(R) Applications
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- July 23, 2008 -- Redpine Signals, Inc., a leading developer of ultra low power multi-standard OFDM and MIMO silicon-based solutions, today announced the successful certification of its ultra low power Lite-Fi(TM) 802.11n SoC for Voice-Personal, the Wi-Fi Alliance's newest certification program for ensuring the delivery of good voice quality over a Wi-Fi link. Redpine's RS9110 Lite-Fi(TM) device enables a new generation of Wi-Fi based VoIP phones that will make available the advantages of 802.11n connectivity at a cost similar to or less than those that use conventional 802.11b/g connectivity.
Voice over Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly popular as greater numbers of mobile phones are getting equipped with Wi-Fi capability. Common Wi-Fi environments, however, have a mix of voice and data traffic, where the available bandwidth needs to be shared. The delivery of uniformly satisfactory quality of voice to the user in these environments depends on the successful prioritization of voice communication over data, audio or video traffic. Through the Voice-Personal certification program, the RS9110 has proven that it meets strict performance level requirements for key voice-related metrics, such as packet loss, latency and jitter.
"Voice over Wi-Fi, both in consumer and enterprise applications, is an intriguing and growing market opportunity. 802.11n, including 802.11n single stream, offers increased network capacity and an enhanced user experience," said Victoria Fodale, Manager, Market Data/Intelligence for In-Stat. "When VoWiFi and 802.11n are combined with ultra low power for battery operated mobile devices, mass market adoption becomes very much a reality. The Wi-Fi Alliance Voice-Personal certification further validates the anticipated market demand for a high-quality Voice over Wi-Fi experience."
The RS9110, with breakthrough power consumption numbers, is designed for mobile and handheld consumer devices with targeted Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM) functionality for power-saving voice/video traffic (WMM®-Power Save) and for ease of establishing secure connectivity (Wi-Fi Protected Setup(TM)). The RS9110 incorporates a variety of features that ease the integration of WLAN into VoIP platforms, including clock and power management.
"Redpine's Lite-Fi product family offers differentiating performance and power advantages achieved through six years of research and backed by over 100 patents in all relevant areas of architecture, signal processing, algorithms and low-power implementation," said Mr. Venkat Mattela, Chief Executive Officer of Redpine Signals Inc. "With the WLAN spectrum becoming increasingly crowded, Wi-Fi based on 802.11n will enable capacity to increase while maintaining and enhancing user experience in the home, office, and public hotspot scenarios. By offering a product that is among the first single-stream client products to be certified for the Wi-Fi 802.11n draft 2.0 standard as well as Voice-Personal, Redpine is pioneering the growth of the voice-over- WiFi market - providing both a quality user experience as well as the preservation of the 802.11n advantage in enterprise networks" he said.
Wi-Fi CERTIFIED
Redpine's Lite-Fi(TM) solution is Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 802.11n draft 2.0 and Voice-Personal by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
"802.11n draft 2.0 is an advanced standard for delivering increased throughput, improved range and Quality of Service (QoS) for enhanced multimedia capabilities. In achieving Wi-Fi CERTIFIED for 802.11n draft 2.0, Redpine Signals has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring industry interoperability and the best experience for Wi-Fi users," said Wi-Fi Alliance executive director Edgar Figueroa.
