POWERVR SGX520, the world’s smallest OpenGL ES 2.0 core achieves Khronos conformance
November 20, 2008 -- Imagination Technologies, the leader in mobile graphics technologies, reports that its POWERVR™ SGX520 graphics processor core has achieved conformance with the Khronos™ OpenGL® ES 2.0 standard.
POWERVR SGX520 is the world’s smallest 3D graphics processor solution to achieve OpenGL ES 2.0 conformance - reinforcing POWERVR’s credentials as the leading mobile and embedded graphics acceleration solution. POWERVR SGX520 is less than 2.6mm2 in TSMC 65LP process.
The Khronos family of multimedia APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) enable multimedia software applications to be written in a sophisticated, well defined and structured manner. Imagination has consistently led the way in delivering fully conformant IP cores that deliver high performance, fully hardware accelerated implementations of popular Khronos graphics APIs. POWERVR SGX supports OpenGL 2.0, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1 and OpenVG™ 1.0, while the previous generation POWERVR MBX 3D acceleration core, already deployed in more than 100m phones and other devices, supports OpenGL ES 1.1 and OpenVG 1.0.1.
POWERVR SGX is already shipping in SoCs from Intel, NEC, Renesas and Texas Instruments. Further devices from these, and other key semiconductor and consumer electronics companies, are already in development. The first phones capable of delivering OpenGL ES 2.0 support, enabled by POWERVR SGX, are on sale in Japan now.
Says Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group: "We congratulate Imagination on this latest in a series of important conformance achievements. OpenGL ES 2.0 enables fully programmable 3D graphics on embedded systems. With the support of major suppliers such as Imagination, OpenGL ES 2.0 is ushering in a new generation of devices that will enable revolutionary applications, ultimately driving consumer demand."
Says Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination Technologies: "High performance, fully conformant support for open standards such as the Khronos APIs is a key strength of all of our IP core technologies. POWERVR SGX was already the first family of graphics IP cores to achieve conformance on commercially available production silicon for all of the Khronos mobile 3D and vector graphics APIs, and we are delighted to now also have conformance for SGX520, the world’s smallest IP core for OpenGL ES 2.0."
