Staccato's Ripcord2 Single-Chip Solution Earns Wireless USB Certification from the USB Implementers Forum
Milestone Achievement for Industry's First and Only Single-Chip 65nm CMOS Implementation Demonstrates Staccato's Commitment to Delivering Standards-Compliant, Worldwide-Compatible Products for Volume Markets
SAN DIEGO -- Dec 15, 2008 -- Staccato Communications, an Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless technology pioneer and leader in Wireless USB from the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), today announced that its Ripcord2(TM) family of single-chip UWB solutions has achieved Wireless USB certification from the USB-IF. Ensuring seamless interoperability with multiple vendors, this latest certification marks a significant production readiness milestone for Ripcord2, and enables Wireless USB for the masses with an affordable, interoperable, low power and small form-factor solution. In addition, Staccato has also announced FCC regulatory certification for Ripcord2 in Band Groups 1, 3 and 6, the first single-chip solution to achieve this milestone, enabling a worldwide compatible solution in a single design.Certification from the USB-IF permits Staccato the use of the Wireless USB logo to highlight product compliance and interoperability to the Wireless USB specification, ensuring a positive end-user experience. In addition to FCC certification, Ripcord2 has also already earned official WiMedia PHY certification for the newly released Spectrum Extension Release (SER) specification, which will pave the way for future versions of Wireless USB products.
"Wireless USB silicon vendors such as Staccato provide the building blocks that allow OEMs to offer compelling and differentiated products enabled with Wireless USB technology," said Jeff Ravencraft, USB-IF president and chairman. "Features offered by Staccato's Ripcord2 will enable market advancements in Wireless USB segments such as PC peripherals."
"Intel has been a supporter of UWB technology as the foundation of Wireless USB from day one," said Steve Eichenlaub, managing director of Intel Capital. "We congratulate Staccato on their increasing role in innovating solutions that are suitable for mass market adoption."
The certification of Ripcord2 will allow it to be listed on the USB-IF Integrators List under the category of peripheral silicon, designating it as a building block for the deployment of Wireless USB in a broad class of devices. Staccato's implementation of its Ripcord2 family is the industry's first solution utilizing 65nm CMOS process technology, and offers a quantum leap in power consumption, size and integration over existing solutions. As a result of the recently announced merger between Staccato and Artimi, Inc., a leading developer of UWB and Wireless USB software and hardware solutions, the company will now have a broad portfolio of certified, end-to-end system solutions to service the PC, PC peripheral, consumer electronic and mobile handset markets.
"This achievement, combined with the ability of Ripcord2 to meet the strict requirements of the market in terms of power, size, performance, system cost and worldwide operation, creates an opportunity to fuel market adoption," said Marty Colombatto, CEO for Staccato Communications. "As the leading provider of both hardware and software solutions for Wireless USB, Staccato will continue to deliver innovations that will help drive this exciting technology into the mainstream."
Designed to meet and exceed the rigorous power, size, performance and system cost requirements associated with enabling mass deployment, Ripcord2 is ideally suited for high volume consumer applications including handsets, DSC/DVC, printers, PMP, wireless audio/video and mass storage.
Based on the Wireless USB 1.0 Specification and the WiMedia UWB Common Radio Platform, Ripcord2's high-level of integration minimizes design risk, lowers system cost and accelerates customers' time-to-market by consolidating all hardware and software components necessary to implement a complete solution.
