ARM becomes a promoter member of the Serial Port Memory Technology Consortium
ARM joins leading mobile market companies in the development, promotion and adoption of the SPMT™ memory interface specification
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- August 24, 2009 -- SPMT, LLC, the entity responsible for licensing the Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT™) specification and administering the SPMT Consortium, today announced that ARM [(LSE: ARM); (Nasdaq: ARMH)] has joined the SPMT Consortium as a promoter member. Together with fellow Consortium promoter members Hynix Semiconductor, Inc. (other-otc: HXSCF), LG Electronics (KRX: 066570), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (other-otc: SSNLF) and Silicon Image, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIMG), ARM plans to promote serial port memory technology for broad market adoption as an industry standard. Founded in May 2009, the promoter members of the SPMT Consortium form the governing body of the organization and are responsible for developing the SPMT specification.
Serial Port Memory Technology is the first-of-its-kind technology for dynamic random access memory (DRAM) capable of delivering the bandwidth flexibility and scalability required by new generations of mobile devices, all at significantly reduced pin count, low power consumption and lower cost. The technology will initially target the mobile handset market, enabling a new generation of devices capable of running highly data intensive, media-rich applications while at the same time extending battery life.
“ARM is a strong supporter of SPMT as a solution for reducing energy consumption and providing the bandwidth capabilities required by future high-performance mobile phones and portable computing devices such as netbooks,” said Peter Hutton, VP technology and systems, ARM. “Joining the SPMT Consortium as a promoter member gives us an opportunity to participate in the establishment of an industry standard that will enable many of the features demanded by the next generation of mobile devices.”
“The Consortium and its members are extremely pleased to have ARM, a company whose technology solutions are powering the majority of mobile devices today, join our organization,” said Jim Venable, president of SPMT, LLC. “ARM’s contribution and commitment to the SPMT standard will be invaluable in the success of this new memory technology.”
Opportunities to participate in the advancement of the Serial Port Memory Technology exist for contributors and adopters. The SPMT promoters welcome companies and organizations to contact the Consortium about joining the group.
