ViXS Systems Teams with MIPS Technologies for High-Performance Processors used in Advanced Multimedia Applications
MIPS32® 74K™ and 1004K™ Cores Used for Set-Top Boxes, Blu-ray Disc Players/Recorders, Video Networking
INTERNATIONAL CES, Las Vegas, Nev. - January 5, 2010 - MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, announced today that ViXS Systems Inc. has partnered with MIPS to enable advanced set-top box, connected TV, Blu-ray disc and video network processor applications including transcoding functionality using the MIPS32® 74K and 1004K platforms. A global leader in innovative and advanced networked multimedia solutions, ViXS has leveraged these platforms to help customers develop next-generation IPTV and cable set-top boxes (STBs), advanced multimedia gateways and Blu-ray disc players/recorders - markets where MIPS Technologies holds the number one market position.
According to research firm Parks Associates, demand for interactive and personalized television services are expected to push annual worldwide set-top box shipments over 200 million by 2013, as providers overhaul their current base with next-generation models capable of supporting applications such as time- and place-shifting and Internet-based offerings.
"As multimedia technology continues to evolve and becomes further integrated into our lives, our customers must respond quickly with advanced solutions that satisfy consumer demand for seamless connectivity and control of their entertainment," said Sally Daub, president and CEO, ViXS Systems. "It made perfect business sense to leverage the processing power and flexibility of MIPS' highest-performing cores and its superior ecosystem to help our customers deliver exceptional products quickly to market."
"ViXS' leading-edge multimedia technology enhances the connectivity and viewing experience for millions of consumers around the world," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing, MIPS Technologies. "We're delighted that our 74K and 1004K cores will be an integral component of a new generation of innovative MIPS-Based ViXS network media processor products, and look forward to extending our considerable presence in the set-top box, video networking and Blu-ray markets."
About the MIPS32 74K and 1004K Core Families
The MIPS32 74K core family provides essential advantages for high-performance SoC design, while significantly reducing overall die area, cost, and power consumption. 74K cores are the industry's first fully-synthesizable processors to surpass 1 GHz using industry standard libraries and EDA flows. The 74K core family is based on a superscalar microarchitecture with out-of-order instruction dispatch. The innovative embedded microarchitecture also incorporates the MIPS® DSP Application Specific Extension (ASE) Rev2. These instructions, coupled with a dual-issue 74K microarchitecture, dramatically boost signal processing performance.
The 74K core family is supported by a robust suite of software development tools, the MIPS DSP Library, and a third party DSP applications network. This enables SoC designers to work in a single design environment and significantly lower system costs by migrating DSP functionality onto a 74K core. The 74K core is available with or without floating point unit support.
The MIPS32 1004K Coherent Processing System (CPS) is the industry's first multi-threaded multiprocessor IP core. Within the 1004K multi-core architecture, multi-threading in each core optimizes pipeline utilization and increases performance. The 1004K CPS is available in two versions: the 1004Kc using integer cores and the 1004Kf with a floating point unit in each core.
