Imagination Technologies licenses high-performance multi-processor graphics processor core to Texas Instruments
May 18, 2010 -- Imagination Technologies Group plc (LSE: IMG; "Imagination"), a leading multimedia and communications chip technologies company, has signed a multi-use license agreement with Texas Instruments Incorporated ("TI") for a multi-processor solution from Imagination's new POWERVR SGX Series5XT Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) IP core family.
TI will deploy the technology in future OMAP™ platform-based SoC designs for Smartphones and other mobile devices. This collaboration will define a new zenith of graphics performance for mobile platforms which operate at extremely low power.
Imagination's POWERVR technology generates advanced graphics and GPU processing capabilities, which exponentially increase the attraction and usability of user interfaces, the speed of browsers, the realism of games, and the impact of navigation applications. Even more, the enhanced capabilities packaged within the OMAP processor will deliver the aforementioned applications across multiple high resolution screens all while dramatically increasing performance.

Following on from the highly successful POWERVR Series5 SGX cores, members of the POWERVR SGX Series5XT Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) IP core family feature significant performance enhancements over the highly successful Series5 architecture used in earlier members of the SGX family of IP cores. All Series5XT SGX cores are based on a second-generation Universal Scalable Shader Engine (USSE2™) that delivers significantly higher processing throughput of the earlier Series5 USSE shader engine, as well as other architectural extensions enabling low-power and high-performance for 2D, 3D and general purpose (GP-GPU) processing in either single core or scalable multi-processor (MP) solutions.
