Imagination brings HD Radio Technology to its global radio platform
MWC, Barcelona, Spain, February 14 2011: Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia and communications technologies company, has extended its market leading world digital radio platform IP with support for the digital radio standard for the USA, iBiquity Digital Corporation’s HD Radio™ Technology.
Imagination and iBiquity have reached an agreement for the two companies to work together to implement HD Radio Technology on Imagination’s Ensigma UCCP Series3 and beyond.
HD Radio Technology is fuelling the digital radio revolution in the United States, and elsewhere. The digital technology enables broadcasters to offer: new digital channels through multicasting; crystal-clear sound; and advanced data services on both the AM and FM bands – all free, with no subscription fee.
The low-power characteristics of Imagination’s technology enables highly-efficient mobile global digital radio devices and will extend the market for HD Radio services dramatically by enabling support for the technology on a broader range of mobile, embedded and automotive devices. The addition of HD Radio Technology to Imagination’s global digital and connected radio platform makes it the ideal multi-standard solution for devices targeting Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas.
Says Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination: “We expect this latest extension of our global radio platform, with support for key standards such as HD Radio Technology, to further our reach into the radio and audio markets and help leading brands in digital radio to reach wider markets more effectively. We are delighted to be working with iBiquity on this ground-breaking new development and to bring HD Radio capabilities to existing UCCP Series3 cores as well as future generation products.”
Says Jeff Jury, COO iBiquity: “Enabling HD Radio Technology on Imagination’s Ensigma UCCP Series3 technology family furthers our push to mass adoption in the United States and international markets. This program will deliver next generation HD Radio mobile and home products. We are excited to work with Imagination to bring HD Radio Technology to its leading digital and connected radio platform.”
The digital radio market continues to be an important focus for Imagination’s multi-standard receiver and processor/DSP technologies. Imagination plays a leading role in providing key technologies for this market and has seen its share of digital radio technology deployment across the European DAB standard reaching 80%.
Imagination’s ENSIGMA UCC Series3 programmable radio processing units (RPU) support worldwide TV and radio reception as well as important connectivity standards such as Wi-Fi - all running on the same silicon engine in software. Over 20 standards are supported on the latest core, UCCP330, which will also be capable of supporting HD Radio Technology.
