AppliedMicro Selects TSMC as Manufacturing Partner for ARM 64-bit SoCs On Advanced 40nm and 28nm Process Technology
Leading-edge processor designs featuring high-performance cores for game-changing cloud applications to be produced at highly advanced silicon manufacturing foundry
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct 27, 2011 -- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (NASDAQ:AMCC), or AppliedMicro, today announced it has selected TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) as its manufacturing partner to develop 64-bit ARM architecture Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) on 40nanometer (nm) and 28nm process technology. Based on the collaboration, AppliedMicro will develop advanced SoC designs featuring 64-bit ARM cores for cloud computing applications and TSMC will manufacture the designs into silicon devices at its leading-edge manufacturing facilities.
"We are excited to extend our relationship with TSMC today to ultimately bring game-changing technology to the cloud computing market," said Paramesh Gopi, President and CEO of AppliedMicro. "AppliedMicro will be the first company to implement the 64-bit ARM architecture in advanced multi-core SoC designs and we will work closely with TSMC, the world's leading foundry, to ensure that this new architecture benefits from the manufacturing excellence that is renowned throughout the industry. Together we will introduce technology to revolutionize the rapidly growing cloud data center infrastructure market in terms of energy-efficiency, performance, bandwidth utilization and total cost of ownership."
AppliedMicro announced earlier today that it plans to introduce advanced processing SoCs based on the ARM v8 64-bit architecture to the cloud computing market, beginning with device introduction in the second half of 2012. The manufacturing announcement today extends AppliedMicro's previous relationship with TSMC for manufacturing advanced high-performance embedded processing and high-speed packet transport SoCs.
"AppliedMicro is developing SoC technology using 64-bit processing cores to address real-world needs in cloud-based computing while delivering the performance this market requires," said Rick Cassidy, President, TSMC North America. "We are pleased to be part of this success, and our collaboration marks another milestone in the relationship between AppliedMicro and TSMC."
