Altera's Military Solutions Secure Networked Battlefield with NSA-Approved Cyclone III LS FPGA
Company to Demonstrate the Cryptographic Capabilities of its Cyclone III LS FPGAs at MILCOM 2011
San Jose, Calif., November 8, 2011 – Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced it will demonstrate at MILCOM 2011 its latest Single-FPGA Cryptography (SFC) solutions leveraging the low-power, low-cost Cyclone ® III LS FPGA which was approved in May 2011 by the National Security Agency (NSA) for use in Type 1 Cryptographic Systems. Altera's SFC solutions include Cyclone III LS FPGA's innovative security features with design separation capabilities, tools and security IP that meet the high-assurance and high-reliability requirements of both commercial and military systems. Attendees visiting Altera's MILCOM booth will see a high-assurance cryptosystem being implemented on its Cyclone III LS FPGA.
"After establishing ourselves as the clear leader in processing waveforms across the battlefield, Altera is leveraging our secure computing technologies to extend our reach into the cryptography side of the radio," said Arun Iyengar, vice president of Altera's MIC Division, which includes the military business unit. "Our NSA-approved Cyclone III LS FPGAs are experiencing strong customer adoption, enabling high-assurance communication through a Single-FPGA Cryptography solution that meets our customer's size, weight and power requirements."
The Cyclone III LS EP3CLS200 FPGAs are the lowest power, highest functionality FPGA to pass the NSA's stringent cryptographic evaluation process. Cyclone III LS FPGAs consumes less than a quarter watt of static power and offer 200K logic elements (LEs), giving the advantage of longer operation in battery-powered products. Altera's SFC solution addresses today's cryptographic system requirements by offering enhanced security features for single-chip encryption and decryption. These features include AES encrypted bitstream protection, key storage and tamper monitoring capabilities. The devices also meet the requirements of the Department of Defense's (DoD) Cryptographic Modernization initiative.
Cyclone III LS FPGAs offer an integrated and easy-to-use cryptography tool flow through Altera's Quartus ® II software that allows customers to build design separation into their SFC solution. The tool flow includes Altera's Separation Verification Tool and Security Supervisor IP which provides a comprehensive solution for creating single-FPGA cryptography on a low-power, low-cost FPGA. Altera's design separation flow is also useful in other high-reliability applications such as industrial safety, DO-254 for commercial avionics and NIST FIPS-140 for commercial cryptography.
Cyclone III LS FPGA-based Demonstration at MILCOM 2011
The commercial-off-the-shelf Cyclone III LS FPGAs are used today to secure the transmission of voice, video and data in applications that require high levels of security. A Cyclone III LS FPGA demonstration at MILCOM shows the encryption and decryption of a live video stream using Altera's SFC solution. The demonstration leverages Altera's Video and Image Processing (VIP) intellectual property (IP) suite and ViaSat's PSIAM™ Suite B Cryptosystem IP, both of which are implemented in a Cyclone III LS FPGA.
About Cyclone III LS FPGAs
The Cyclone III LS FPGA offers enhanced security features and design separation for single-FPGA cryptography, all with the lowest power profile in the FPGA industry. Cyclone III LS FPGAs offer high-functionality (up to 200K logic elements, 8.2 Mbits of memory and 396 multipliers) while consuming less than a quarter watt of static power. Cyclone III LS FPGAs are used in a wide range of commercial and military applications and are ideal for meeting the long product life requirements of these applications.
