LSI Logic Delivers the Industry's First 200 MHz ARM946E-S(TM) Core
Improved Offering of Popular Core Boosts Overall System Performance In Increasingly Demanding Communications, Storage and Consumer Applications
MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI - news) today announced the availability of the industry's first ARM946E-S(TM) processor core to run at 200 MHz, a significant performance improvement to earlier implementations of the core. LSI Logic's system-on-chip (SoC) customers who need the highest performance embedded processor cores available will realize the full benefit of the new offering to maximize overall system performance in their increasingly demanding applications. LSI Logic's implementation of this popular core, licensed from ARM Limited, includes 16K Bytes instruction and 16K Bytes data caches and configurable tightly coupled memories (TCMs). The 200 MHz ARM946E-S core extends LSI Logic's broad library of CoreWare® products that support the AMBA(TM) 2.0 AHB bus specification. LSI Logic has already won a number of key customer SoC designs with the new implementation of the ARM946E-S core.
"Reaching 200 MHz operation, under worst case conditions, with the ARM946E-S core is a significant milestone," said Rafi Kedem, senior director of processor cores at LSI Logic. "Our customers are extremely satisfied with our ability to extend the ARM946E-S(TM) core performance range to the 200 MHz mark. Customers now can efficiently utilize a commodity SDRAM system without leaving memory performance on the table. This higher performance core also increases the range of key application frequencies that we can address."
LSI Logic was one of ARM's lead partners in the development of the ARM9E-S(TM) family, the ARM946E-S core and the ARM966E-S(TM) core, and is a lead partner on the recently announced ARM926EJ-S(TM) core with the ARM Jazelle(TM) Java technology-enabled processor core.
"LSI Logic is a world leader in complex system-on-chip designs and has invested considerable effort to provide some of the best ARM® SoC capabilities available anywhere in the industry," said Joe Barrett, general manager, Cores for ARM. "It is fitting that they should become the first ARM partner to get to 200 MHz on this industry-leading core."
LSI Logic provides a comprehensive offering of processor cores, peripherals, reference designs, platforms, and specialized regional CoreWare® design support to help customers implement high performance complex SoC ASIC designs as easily as possible. The company has standardized on AMBA as its SoC bus standard for all processor related CoreWare and peripherals, including all ARM, MIPS®, and ZSP(TM) processor cores.
