Lattice Announces New 32 QFN Package For MachXO2 Programmable Logic Devices
New Package is Ideal for a Broad Range of Applications Requiring Low Cost, Low Power PLDs in Space-Constrained Environments
HILLSBORO, OR – APRIL 24, 2012 – Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC) today announced the immediate availability of its low cost, low power MachXO2™ family of programmable logic devices (PLD) in a new 32 QFN (Quad Flatpack No-leads) package. Since the MachXO2 family's production release in 2011, customers worldwide have taken advantage of its innovative combination of ease-of-use, flexibility, system integration and affordability. The addition of this small 5mm x 5mm form factor package option extends use of the MachXO2 PLDs to applications where size constraints, ease of layout and manufacturability are critical.
One customer that has already designed the MachXO2 device in the new 32 QFN package into its products is Arago Systems of Sophia Antipolis, France. "Our Wisnet product families of IPv6 sensor network nodes and gateways (6LoWPAN) require tiny form factor, low power consumption, industrial temperature range and low cost," said Arnault Fontebride, Chief Technical Officer of Arago Systems. "The function and flexibility of the MachXO2 PLD in the small, rugged, easy-to-manufacture 32 QFN package is a combination that fits perfectly into our demanding industrial requirements."
The MachXO2 PLD family's unique system integration benefits drive its widespread adoption in a broad range of low density applications that require general purpose I/O expansion, interface bridging and power-up management functions. Built-in system functions include hardened implementations of widely used I2C and SPI interfaces and a timer/counter in the Embedded Function Block (EFB), providing up to 429 Look Up Tables (LUT) of pre-designed, pre-verified functionality. Engineers at Arago Systems implemented the I2C interfaces in their Wisnet products, saving valuable design effort and reducing time to market.
"The widespread adoption of the MachXO2 PLD family in system and consumer applications reflects our customers' enthusiastic acceptance of low cost, low power, non-volatile PLDs to quickly bring their products to rapidly evolving markets," said Shakeel Peera, Lattice Director of Strategic Marketing. "The addition of the 32 QFN package to the MachXO2 portfolio promises to broaden its application in space-constrained, low power applications, including consumer, communications, computing, industrial and medical."
Reference Designs and Easy to Use Development Kits
In order to accelerate development time, over 35 popular reference designs and IP Cores, and the easy-to-use MachXO2 Pico and Control Development Kits, are available for prototyping cost sensitive, low density applications. Using the preloaded designs provided with the development kit, designers can test within minutes I2C, SPI and UART interfaces. Engineers can rebuild these demonstration designs using the free downloadable reference design source codes in less than one hour, providing a known good starting point for their own design explorations. Other reference designs enable designers of system control applications to rapidly prototype typical board control functions such as temperature and current monitoring, power supply sequencing, fault logging, reset distribution and fan control used in system control designs.
Pricing and Availability
Engineering samples of the MachXO2-256 devices in the 32 QFN package are available immediately and supported in Lattice Diamond® design software version 1.4.2. Production-qualified versions are scheduled for Q3 2012. All other MachXO2 PLDs are fully production qualified and have been shipping since 2011. MachXO2 PLDs feature a broad range of densities, packages and speed grade options and are available for ordering via the Lattice online store at www.latticesemi.com/store and through authorized Lattice distributors at www.latticesemi.com/sales. MachXO2 PLDs with 256 LUTs are available for $0.55 in volumes of 250K units. For more information about the Lattice MachXO2 PLD family, visit www.latticesemi.com/machxo2.
