Over 1 billion units shipped by Imagination partners
November 12, 2012 -- Tokyo, Japan -- Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia and communications technologies company, has shipped, via its partners, over 1 billion cumulative SoCs (systems on chip) containing its IP cores.
The company announced this significant milestone at an event at the British Embassy in Tokyo today, attended by executives from leading semiconductor and consumer electronics companies.
Imagination was established in 1985 in Britain and has a long history as an IP provider, with partners amongst the world’s top-20 semiconductor and OEM companies. It licenses fundamental multimedia, communications and processor technologies and receives a royalty when products using those technologies ship into the market.
Says Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination: “Each of our core technologies is built on smart technology innovations. These include the tile-based deferred rendering (TBDR) of PowerVR graphics processors (GPUs); the unique combination of fixed and reconfigurable elements in PowerVR video processors (VPUs); the fully programmable VLIW engine powering our Ensigma connectivity and communications radio processors (RPUs); and the hardware multi-threading of our Meta processors (CPUs). Each of our main IP families have delivered significant volume shipments contributing to our 1 billion unit cumulative SoC shipments, often with multiple IP cores on the same SoC. So we’ve actually shipped several billion cores, as our partners work with more and more of our IP portfolio to create leading edge SoCs.”
Notably the company also announced that it has shipped over 500 million units of its video decode and encode IP core families, making it the world’s largest supplier of licensable hardware video decode and encode technologies. The PowerVR video cores are the industry leader in low power, including the ability to decode H.264HP 1080P30 video in under 15mw (40LP).
Imagination is presenting several papers on its licensable technologies at Embedded Technology in Yokohama on November 14-16 2012 as well as demonstrating its latest licensable IP technologies (Booth C-20).
